Nitrilo triacetic acid

Organic compound (such as ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) or nitrilo-triacetic acid (NTA) having the ability to take metal ions in water and produce soluble, coordinate-bond complexes. Chelants are commonly used in BW deposit control treatments and various cleaning formulations. 

With this example we have shown how the mathematical formulations of the processes which are part of the model can be combined into one single linear differential equation. Illustrative Example 21.1 deals with another example, the dynamics of nitrilo-triacetic acid (NTA) in Greifensee. 

Chromatographic System Set up the system with reference to High-Performance Liquid Chromatography under Chromatography, Appendix IIA. The HPLC chromatograph has a 254-nm detector and a 4.6-mm x 15-cm column that contains 5- to 10-mm porous microparticles of silica bonded to octylsilane (Zorbax 8, or equivalent). The flow rate is about 2 mL/min. Chromatograph three replicate injections of the Standard Preparation, and record the peak responses as directed under Procedure. The relative standard deviation is not more than 2.0%, and the resolution factor between nitrilo-triacetic acid and Disodium EDTA is not less than 4.0.

Nitrilo triacetic acid (NTA) also represents a partial replacement of phosphate. However, the US Surgeon General issued a report stating that NTA caused birth defects in rats. The use of NTA was immediately phased out in the United States [4]. 

Chelating agents. The role of the chelating agents is to block the polyvalent ions and to make them undetectable and ineffective. Sodium salts of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and of nitrilo triacetic acid (NTA) are members of the group of chelating agents and their use has increased in the last few years. 

Derivatives of iminodiacetic acid, NH(CHjCOOH), are most successful sequestering agents (Summersgill, loc. cit.). Two compounds of this class have had commercial success, namely, nitrilo triacetic acid, N(CH,.C00H)3, and ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid, (COOH.CH,)jN.CH2.CH,.N(CH,.COOH)j. Ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid, often abbreviated to E.D.T.A., has virtually displaced nitrilo triacetic acid because the complexes which it makes with metallic ions are more stable. Imanari et al. has reported a spectrophotometric detection of many inorganic anions using a post-column reactor [42]. A stream of ferric perchlorate, which is essentially colorless, is mixed with the column effluent. The ferric perchlorate is colorless because perchlorate is a poor complexing anion, but most anions will complex the iron and form colored species that can be detected at 330-340 nm (Table 4.3). A similar detection method works for ions such as orthophosphate, pyrophosphate, nitrilo-triacetic acid (NTA), and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) [46].

It may be noted finally that 7Li (92.7%) gives nuclear magnetic resonance signals comparable to those given by so that complex formation in aqueous solutions can be studied in this way it was shown24 that nitrilo-triacetic acid, N(CH2COOH)3 (NTA), probably forms a complex ion, [Li(NTA)2]5, in solution.

With oxides containing higher chromium contents, the Lomi process proceeds very slowly since vanadous picolinate is not able to reduce Cr(III). If the chromium concentration in the oxide exceeds 15%, the dissolution rates will become unacceptably low. Therefore, in such applications, the Cr(III) must first be oxidized to Cr(VI) by an appropriate preoxidation step (AP and NP steps, see below). In order to save this time-consuming additional step, attempts have been made to replace V(II) by another reducing cation. Only a combination of Cr(II) with nitrilo triacetic acid or with EDTA shows a faster reaction, but it suffers from insufficient thermal stability thus, it cannot be used in the decontamination of systems and circuits. 

We found that many tridentate ligands are very efficient and afford quantitative complex formation at 10 6 M and for some examples even down to concentrations of 10 M, i.e. at stoichiometric ratios [49]. The drawback of tridentate chelators is the need to introduce the second function for covalent coupling to the biomolecule. Sometimes this functional group might already be present in the native ligand, e.g. as in nitrilo-triacetic acid (NTA), but tailor-made chelators in general demand... 

On mild steel, the inhibiting activity and passivation characteristics exerted by carboxy and phosphono groups were determined by gravimetric measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The organic chemicals under investigation included nitrilo(triacetic acid) (NTA), phos-phonomethyl-iminodi(acetic acid) (MPIDA), di(phosphonomethyl)glycine (DMPG), and nitrilotri(methyl-phosphonic acid) (ATMP).
