Domestic. Estimates of U.S. uranium resources for reasonably assured resources, estimated additional resources, and speculative resources at costs of 80, 130, and 260/kg of uranium are given in Table 1 (18). These estimates include only conventional uranium resources, which principally include sandstone deposits of the Colorado Plateaus, the Wyoming basins, and the Gulf Coastal Plain of Texas. Marine phosphorite deposits in central Elorida, the western United States, and other areas contain low grade uranium having 30—150 ppm U that can be recovered as a by-product from wet-process phosphoric acid. Because of relatively low uranium prices, on the order of 20.67/kg U (19), in situ leach and by-product plants accounted for 76% of total uranium production in 1992 (20). 

Sulfur is a reactive, nonmetallic element naturally found in nature in a free or combined state. Large deposits of elemental sulfur are found in various parts of the world, with some of the largest being along the coastal plains of Louisiana. In its combined form, sulfur is naturally present in sulfide ores of metals such as iron, zinc, copper, and lead. It is also a constituent of natural gas and refinery gas streams in the form of hydrogen sulfide. Different processes have been developed for obtaining sulfur and sulfuric acid from these three sources.

Clustered sites would be located within a single ecoregion or at least have similar ecological characteristics (e.g., southeastern coastal plain streams), and would consist of a series of geographically proximal locations (approximately 10 to 20 water bodies) where similar atmospheric loads (or load reductions) are anticipated. Cluster sites would be sampled on a routine basis (e.g., quarterly) for a prolonged period of time. Individual sites within a cluster would be specifically chosen to represent a range of site characteristics that are known to affect Hg cycling (e g., pH, DOC,... 

While an exact number of site clusters has not been proposed, the authors consider from approximately 3 to 10 clusters of sites to be appropriate. These clusters should represent different ecoregions with different ecological characteristics as well as different loadings (both in amount and source) of mercury deposition. Care should be taken to monitor different types of water bodies and watersheds (e.g., seepage lakes, drainage lakes, old reservoirs, rivers, and estuaries). Areas that should be considered as potential cluster site locations include lakes in northern New England/the Adirondacks, lakes in the upper Midwest, rivers and streams in the southeastern coastal plain, lakes in south-central and southeastern Canada, western... 

Study 2. This study was conducted at the Upper Coastal Plain Research Station near Rocky Mount (Norfolk loamy sand) and the Lower Coastal Plain Research Station near Kinston (Goldsboro loamy sand), North Carolina, to investigate the effects of various small grain residues on weed growth in no-till corn and soybeans.

Sediments of Tertiary and Quaternary age, including volcanic ash and aeolian materials, make up the parent material of the soils. In the more arid parts of the Andean System (the coastal plain of Peru and Chile, and the Altiplano of Bolivia) the topography is level. The Altiplano is a very large closed basin with numerous salt flats. In northwestern Argentina, the planar topography is broken by mountains composed of Precambrian rocks and Quaternary sediments. 

Cavallaro and McBride (1984a) observed that the removal of Fe oxides from two clay soils reduced Zn adsorption. Shuman (1976) reported that the removal of Fe oxides resulted in an increase or decrease in Zn adsorption, but later in another similar study (1988) he found that the removal of either amorphous or crystalline Fe oxides increased Zn adsorption capacity and decreased Zn-bonding energy. The author explained that adsorption sites on the Fe oxide coatings were not as numerous as those released when the coatings were removed. Elliott et al. (1986) observed that DCB extraction of Fe oxides from two subsoils of the Atlantic Coastal Plain increased heavy metal adsorption. Wu et al. (1999) found that Cu adsorption on the fine clay fraction increased after dithionite treatment with possible exposure of much more high-affinity sites for Cu on the fine clay.

Acetate is added to the aquifer sediments at a rate of 4 xmol m-3 yr-1, within the range of 2-5 imol m-3 yr-1 observed by Park et al. (2006) in nonmarine sediments of a coastal plain aquifer.

While phosphorus export from agricultural systems is usually dominated by surface runoff, important exceptions occur in sandy, acid organic, or peaty soils that have low phosphorus adsorption capacities and in soils where the preferential flow of water can occur rapidly through macropores (Sharpley et al., 1998 Sims et al., 1998). Soils that allow substantial subsurface exports of dissolved phosphorus are common on parts of the Atlantic coastal plain and Honda, and are thus important to consider in the management of coastal eutrophication in these regions.

In weakly consolidated, stratified sediments, the injection pressure must be controlled so that the surrounding formation is not fractured. If fracturing occurs, there is usually a severe loss in hydraulic conductivity because the bedding planes are disturbed. Pressures that will cause fracturing range from a low of 0.5 psi/ft of depth for poorly consolidated coastal plain sediments, to 1.2 psi/ft depth for crystalline rock. For most recharge wells in unconsolidated sediments, the injection pressure should be carefully controlled so that the positive head (in psi at the surface) does not exceed 0.2 x h, where h is the depth (in ft) from the ground surface to the top of the screen or filter pack. 

At present, 16 major refineries and 33 aboveground bulk liquid tank farms are situated on the Los Angeles coastal plain. The locations of these refineries and tank farms, and associated major pipeline corridors, are shown in Figure 12.24.
