Hypochlorite chlorinated trisodium phosphate

Chlorinated Trisodium Phosphate. Chlorinated trisodium phosphate [11084-85-8] is a crystalline complex of hydrated trisodium orthophosphate and sodium hypochlorite that releases hypochlorite when mixed with water. Its formula is (Na PO 11H20)4 NaOCl. Commercial... [Pg.143]

Solid sodium hypochlorite is not commercially available, because it is too chemically unstable. Chlorinated trisodium phosphate , [Na3P04 11H20]4 NaOCl, on the other hand, is industrially important in the cleaning agent sector. This has an available chlorine content of 3.65%. It is obtained by reacting a sodium phosphate solution with a sodium hypochlorite solution in the appropriate molar concentrations at 75 to 80°C. [Pg.169]

Lithium hypochlorite can be obtained by mixing strong solutions of sodium hypochlorite with lithium chloride. This results in partial precipitation of sodium chloride. The product obtained by evaporation of supematent solution typically contains 30% lithium hypochlorite (LiOCl), 34% sodium chloride and other salts. Chlorinated trisodium phosphate is a hydrated complex having chemical formula (Naj PO. H3O) NaOCl and contains approximately 4% available chlorine. Gener-... [Pg.163]

Hypochlorites of sodium, calcium, and lithium, and chlorinated trisodium phosphate involve chlorine in their production. Sodium hypochlorite of about 5% strength finds extensive use in the household bleach market and in residential swimming pools, and 15% sodium hypochlorite, an industrial bleach, is used for water treatment in municipal and industrial plants. Sodium hypochlorite is made by reacting chlorine with caustic soda. Calcium hypochlorite is mainly used as a swimming pool chemical. Aluminum chloride, produced from chlorine and aluminum or alumina, is used as a catalyst (for alkyl and ethyl benzenes, dyestuffs, ethyl chloride, and hydrocarbon resin production) and also in the production of pharmaceuticals and titanium dioxide. [Pg.11]

This chapter reviews the production of sodium, potassium, calcium, and lithium salts of hypochlorite as well as a crystalline complex of hydrated trisodium orthophosphate and sodium hypochlorite known as chlorinated trisodium phosphate. These inorganic hypochlorite salts are used in detergent and cleaning products to kill all types of pathogens, decolorize stains, and break down and remove many kinds of soil. They are also widely used for water and wastewater disinfection and a variety of industrial uses. [Pg.436]

Chlorinated trisodium phosphate was introduced in 1928, about the same time as calcium hypochlorite. It is a crystalline complex of hydrated trisodium orthophosphate and sodium hypochlorite with an approximate formula of (Na3P04 11H20)4 NaOCl. It also contains other phosphate salts and sodium chloride. Chlorinated trisodium phosphate is still used in commercial laundries and disinfectant cleaners. In other products, such as powdered abrasive cleansers and automatic dishwash detergents, it has been largely replaced by chlorinated isocyanurates to reduce cost, improve performance, or comply with phosphate restrictions. [Pg.437]

In the original process, sodium hypochlorite was added to a solution of sodium phosphate and chlorinated trisodium phosphate was then separated by crystallization. The process was improved by adding a solution that contains 14—16% sodium hypochlorite and 2-4% sodium hydroxide to a hot, concentrated solution of sodium phosphate in a jacketed, heavy-duty mixer. The phosphate... [Pg.454]

Trisodium phosphate is strongly alkaline many of its appHcations depend on this property. For example, many heavy-duty cleaning compositions contain trisodium phosphate as a primary alkalinity source. The crystalline dodecahydrate itself is marketed as a cleaning compound and paint remover. Traditionally, trisodium phosphate has been used in water softening to remove polyvalent metal ions by precipitation as insoluble phosphates. Because the hypochlorite complex of trisodium phosphate provides solutions that are strongly alkaline and contain active chlorine, it is used in disinfectant cleaners, scouring powders, and automatic dishwashing formulations. [Pg.332]

Sodium Hypochlorite—Trisodium Phosphate Complex. Commercial crystalline trisodium phosphate (TSP) is a complex of the type (Na PO -xH20) NaY where n = 4 to 7, a = 11 or 12, and Y is a monovalent anion (see Phosphoric acids and phosphates). Chlorinated trisodium... [Pg.472]

Economic Aspects. Sodium hypochlorite—trisodium phosphate complex was commercialized in 1930. Chlorinated TSP is manufactured by Stauffer (a subsidiary of Rhc ne-Poulenc, Inc.). The consumption, steadily decreasing since 1980, dropped sharply in 1985 because of reduced use in dishwasher detergents. The estimated demand in 1987 was 37,360 t (220). In 1988 it sold for 0.32/lb ( 0.70/kg) for tmddoad quantities of 660 kg (300-lb) dmms. [Pg.472]

Crystals of NaOCl 2.5H2O can also be made. A 35-40% sodium hypochlorite solution is made by chlorinating sodium hydroxide. The precipitated salt is removed by filtration. Additional sodium hydroxide is added so that the solution contains at least 15% sodium hydroxide and 15% sodium hypochlorite. The solution is cooled to -O C when NaOCl 2.5H2O crystallizes. The crystals are removed by filtration, and the mother liquor is recycled into the process. Solid mixtures of sodium chloride and sodium hypochlorite are made by reacting a fine spray of sodium hydroxide with chlorine gas. The stability is improved by melting the solid and adding an anhydrous salt that forms a stable hydrate such as sodium metaborate, trisodium phosphate, " or sodium carbonate. " Solid sodium hypochlorite is also made by vacuum evaporation of concentrated sodium hypochlorite solution that is essentially free of chloride ions. ... [Pg.451]
