Trisodium phosphate [7601-54-9] trisodium orthophosphate, Na PO, is an important constituent of hard-surface cleaners including those for ceramic, metal, or painted surfaces. It may be used with soaps, surfactants, or other alkaHes. It precipitates many heavy-metal ions but does not sequester to form soluble chelates. It is thus a precipitant builder and additionally an alkaH. 

Fixation in 6-12 hours with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and trisodium orthophosphate, a metering device being necessary. This method is recommended for regenerated cellulosic fibres. This formulation contains the same total amount of alkali as method (1) with the same bath stability, but may be preferred where some buffering capacity is required and sodium silicate is undesirable.

Chemistry of the crystalline chloro-trisodium orthophosphate is elucidated. This widely used cleaning and sanitation ingredient can be produced by a melt crystallization approach. A hot phosphatesolution with a Na/P mole ratio of about 2.8 is mixed with a hypochlorite solution. The resulting solution is vacuum cooled to produce crystalline product with a size distribution of about -20+200 mesh, suitable for formulating into automatic dish washing compounds.

According to Bell (3), Cl-TSP has the empirical formula 4(Na3P04-XH20) NaY, where X=ll-12 and Y is OCl. This empirical formula, however, is not in agreement with the composition given by Mathias (4) and Alder (5). The earlier inventors showed that Cl-TSP has a Na/P mole ratio to be less than three. The Bell proposed formula has been well accepted and a term, chlorinated trisodium phosphate has often been used, as depicted by reaction 1 below. Unfortunately, the implied chemical reaction, chlorination of crystalline trisodium orthophosphate, does not produce the desired product, Cl-TSP. Some clarification of this preparation is needed.

The data for the NaP0s-Na2Si03 system are given in Table VIII. In the x-ray diffraction patterns of the samples with P/Si ratios of 0.85-1.50, there are unknown peaks of strong intensity at spacings of 2.63 and 4.29 A. and of medium intensity at spacing of 2.79 A. According to a paper by Ohashi and Ikeda (40), these unknown peaks may be caused by one of the modifications of trisodium orthophosphate (see Section III-A). Further discussions are based on this assumption. 

The sample with a P/Si ratio of 1.00 is composed of trisodium orthophosphate and a-cristobalite. Therefore, it is quite evident that when a mixture of sodium metaphosphate and sodium metasilicate with a mole ratio of 1 1 is melted, the following reaction proceeds. 

The samples with P/Si ratios smaller than 1.00 contain trisodium orthophosphate but not a-cristobalite. For these samples the silicon dioxide produced by equation 1 reacts further with an excess of sodium metasilicate to form glassy sodium silicate. The samples with P/Si ratios larger than 1.00 contain a-cristobalite and two of the following three phosphate species trisodium orthophosphate, tetrasodium diphosphate, and pentasodium triphosphate (high-temperature form). The quantity of a-cristobalite in these samples, of course, decreases with the increase of the P/Si ratio. The amount of orthophosphate decreases and diphosphate increases when the P/Si ratio increases from 1.00 to... 

With a further increase of the P/Si ratio the diphosphate decreases and triphosphate increases. These facts indicate that trisodium orthophosphate produced according to reaction 1 reacts further with an excess of sodium metaphosphate to form di- and triphosphate. Small amounts of chain phosphates longer than triphosphate were found in the aqueous solutions of the samples with P/Si ratios of 3.00 and 4.00. Since anhydrous crystals of chain phosphates such as hexasodium tetra-phosphate and heptasodium pentaphosphate have not been obtained so far, it is reasonable to suppose that the chain phosphates longer than tri-... 

From a consideration of the above discussion it may be concluded that the main reaction of an equimolar mixture of sodium metaphosphate and disodium sulfate at a high temperature proceeds according to equation 8 and that any compound with S-O-P linkages, at least as a major component in the crystalline substances, is not formed by this reaction. A pattern of normal trisodium orthophosphate exhibits three characteristic peaks at spacings of 2.55, 2.70, and 4.25 A. The discrepancy between the spacings of the peaks due to normal trisodium orthophosphate and the unknown species discussed here remains as an unsolved problem.
