The use of chlorinated trisodium phosphate is declining. It has been largely replaced by chlorinated isocyanurates in powdered abrasive cleansers and automatic dishwash detergents to reduce cost, improve performance, or comply with restrictions on the use of phosphates. Some chlorinated trisodium phosphate is stiU used in commercial laundries and in disinfectant cleaners. 

Abrasive cleaners arc used lo remove soils and stains from hard surfaces that are durable lo the scouring action. Such surfaces include stainless steel and porcelain plumbing fixtures, metal and ceramic cooking utensils, and various stone, metal, and ceramic building surfaces. Typically, these products consist of a very high level of abrasive (commonly silica flour) with moderate to low levels of a dry chlorine bleach (KDCC or chlorinaled trisodium phosphate) and low levels of surfactant (LAS) and builder (STP) for wetting action and improved stain removal... 

Solid sodium hypochlorite is not commercially available, because it is too chemically unstable. Chlorinated trisodium phosphate , [Na3P04 11H20]4 NaOCl, on the other hand, is industrially important in the cleaning agent sector. This has an available chlorine content of 3.65%. It is obtained by reacting a sodium phosphate solution with a sodium hypochlorite solution in the appropriate molar concentrations at 75 to 80°C.

Lithium hypochlorite can be obtained by mixing strong solutions of sodium hypochlorite with lithium chloride. This results in partial precipitation of sodium chloride. The product obtained by evaporation of supematent solution typically contains 30% lithium hypochlorite (LiOCl), 34% sodium chloride and other salts. According to Bell (3), Cl-TSP has the empirical formula 4(Na3P04-XH20) NaY, where X=ll-12 and Y is OCl. This empirical formula, however, is not in agreement with the composition given by Mathias (4) and Alder (5). The earlier inventors showed that Cl-TSP has a Na/P mole ratio to be less than three. The Bell proposed formula has been well accepted and a term, chlorinated trisodium phosphate has often been used, as depicted by reaction 1 below. Unfortunately, the implied chemical reaction, chlorination of crystalline trisodium orthophosphate, does not produce the desired product, Cl-TSP. Some clarification of this preparation is needed.

Hypochlorites of sodium, calcium, and lithium, and chlorinated trisodium phosphate involve chlorine in their production. Sodium hypochlorite of about 5% strength finds extensive use in the household bleach market and in residential swimming pools, and 15% sodium hypochlorite, an industrial bleach, is used for water treatment in municipal and industrial plants. Sodium hypochlorite is made by reacting chlorine with caustic soda. Calcium hypochlorite is mainly used as a swimming pool chemical. Aluminum chloride, produced from chlorine and aluminum or alumina, is used as a catalyst (for alkyl and ethyl benzenes, dyestuffs, ethyl chloride, and hydrocarbon resin production) and also in the production of pharmaceuticals and titanium dioxide. 

This chapter reviews the production of sodium, potassium, calcium, and lithium salts of hypochlorite as well as a crystalline complex of hydrated trisodium orthophosphate and sodium hypochlorite known as chlorinated trisodium phosphate. These inorganic hypochlorite salts are used in detergent and cleaning products to kill all types of pathogens, decolorize stains, and break down and remove many kinds of soil. They are also widely used for water and wastewater disinfection and a variety of industrial uses. 

In the original process, sodium hypochlorite was added to a solution of sodium phosphate and chlorinated trisodium phosphate was then separated by crystallization. The process was improved by adding a solution that contains 14—16% sodium hypochlorite and 2-4% sodium hydroxide to a hot, concentrated solution of sodium phosphate in a jacketed, heavy-duty mixer.
