Pecans. Pecan is the most important horticultural crop native to North America (163). The United States is the only substantial producer of pecan, despite the fact that pecans have been introduced into AustraUa, Israel, South Africa, and Argentina. The principal producing states, from high to low, are Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Alabama, Oklahoma, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, and California. Timber-preservation creosotes are mainly blends of wash oil, strained anthracene oil, and heavy oil having minor amounts of oils boiling in the 200—250°C range. Coal-tar creosote is also a feedstock for carbon black manufacture (see Carbon, carbon black). Almost any blend of tar oils is suitable for this purpose, but the heavier oils are preferred. Other smaller markets for creosote were for fluxing coal tar, pitch, and bitumen in the manufacture of road binders and for the production of horticultural winter wash oils and disinfectant emulsions. [Pg.347]

Peat Peat is partially decomposed plant matter that has accumulated underwater or in a water-saturated environment. It is the precursor of coal but is not classified as coal. Sold under the term peat moss or moss peat, peat is used in the United States mainly for horticultural and agricultural apphcations, but interest is growing in its use as a fuel in certain local areas (e.g.. North Carolina). Peat is used extensively as a fuel primarily in Ireland and the former Soviet Union. Although analyses of peat vary widely, a typical high-grade peat has 90 percent water, 3 percent fixed carbon, 5 percent volatile matter, 1.5 percent ash, and O.IO percent sulfur. The moisture-free heating value is approximately 20.9 MJ/kg (9000 Btu/lb). [Pg.2361]

Even when horticultural crops leave substantial amounts of nitrate in the soil at harvest, they are not usually a very important factor in the nitrate problem because horticulture occupies only about 6% of the cultivable land.
