The toxicity data for 24-epibrassiaohde and the low dose at which it ehcits growth regulatory responses ia plants makes it appealing for agronomic and horticultural use. 

Horticultural appHcations include use of greenhouse thermal screens, rowcrop and turf covers, conveyer belts to process agricultural products, and other similar items. High performance fibers are not normally used in these appHcations, but high strength fibers are preferable for conveyer belts. Environmentally inert low cost fibers such as polypropylene are used for many of the outdoor horticultural appHcations. 

Naturally Occurring Compounds. Many derivatives of iadole are found ia plants and animals where they are derived from the amino acid tryptophan. Several of these have important biological function or activity. Serotonin [50-67-9] (12) functions as a neurotransmitter and vasoconstrictor (35). Melatonin [73-31-4] (13) production is controlled daily by the circadian cycle and its physiological level iafluences, and seasonal rhythms ia humans and other species (36). Indole-3-acetic acid [87-51-4] (14) is a plant growth stimulant used ia several horticultural appHcations (37). 

Pecans. Pecan is the most important horticultural crop native to North America (163). The United States is the only substantial producer of pecan, despite the fact that pecans have been introduced into AustraUa, Israel, South Africa, and Argentina. The principal producing states, from high to low, are Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Alabama, Oklahoma, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, and California. Domestic production of 135,597 t/yr in 1990—1991 was valued at 308,954,500 (153).

Timber-preservation creosotes are mainly blends of wash oil, strained anthracene oil, and heavy oil having minor amounts of oils boiling in the 200—250°C range. Coal-tar creosote is also a feedstock for carbon black manufacture (see Carbon, carbon black). Almost any blend of tar oils is suitable for this purpose, but the heavier oils are preferred. Other smaller markets for creosote were for fluxing coal tar, pitch, and bitumen in the manufacture of road binders and for the production of horticultural winter wash oils and disinfectant emulsions. 

Peat Peat is partially decomposed plant matter that has accumulated underwater or in a water-saturated environment. It is the precursor of coal but is not classified as coal. Sold under the term peat moss or moss peat, peat is used in the United States mainly for horticultural and agricultural apphcations, but interest is growing in its use as a fuel in certain local areas (e.g.. North Carolina). Peat is used extensively as a fuel primarily in Ireland and the former Soviet Union. Although analyses of peat vary widely, a typical high-grade peat has 90 percent water, 3 percent fixed carbon, 5 percent volatile matter, 1.5 percent ash, and O.IO percent sulfur. The moisture-free heating value is approximately 20.9 MJ/kg (9000 Btu/lb). 

Even when horticultural crops leave substantial amounts of nitrate in the soil at harvest, they are not usually a very important factor in the nitrate problem because horticulture occupies only about 6% of the cultivable land. However, there could be a problem if, because of the type of soil, a number of market gardens were concentrated above an aquifer that was an important source of potable water. 

In agriculture and horticulture plastics are most widely known in film form but they also find use for water piping containers, automatic watering equipment and potato chitting trays to name but a few uses. 

As a blow moulding material polypropylene has never enjoyed the success of HDPE. This is in large measure because moulding of the former requires more attention to equipment design and operating conditions. Many successful mouldings have nevertheless been made commercially including chairs, horticultural sprayers and motor car parts.

The best source of the alkaloids is commercial nicotine or the concentrated tobacco extracts, used as horticultural insecticides. The average alkaloidal content of tobacco leaf is about 4,- and does not as a rule exceed 6, per cent. In 1,026 parts of the total alkaloids of Kentucky tobacco, Pictet and Rotschy found nicoteine 20, nicotimine 5 and nicotelline 1, the rest being nicotine, but, as Markwood has pointed out.
