For over three decades, Timber Press has published books on plants, including encyclopaedias, horticultural monographs, field guides and the occasional Flora. Timber Press s market and authors are international, and many of its books are translated into and from other languages. It is not an academic or institutional publisher, neither is it geared to publishing for the mass market. Timber Press is a mid-range, commercial publisher of information-rich books on plants, and it is from that perspective that the present chapter is written. 

The term horticultural monograph or monograph used in this chapter refers to books on a genus or group of plants intended for a horticultural and botanical audience, as distinct from a scientific monograph intended for an academic readership.
