Bisphenol F epoxy resins are used in high-soHds-high-build systems such as tank and pipe linings, industrial floors, road and bridge deck toppings, stmctural adhesives, grouts, coatings, and electrical varnishes. Bisphenol F epoxy resins are manufactured in Europe and Japan. [Pg.363]

PLATE 8 Corrosion is a chemical process whose results are easy to see in the world around us. In this picture, corrosion of reinforcing steel has caused the conerete pillars to spall, weakening the bridge and forcing the installation of wooden joists to temporarily support the bridge deck structure. The results of corrosion impose significant economic costs on society—in 1982, these eosts were estimated at about 120 billion. Courtesy, Robert Baboian, Texas Instruments, Inc. [Pg.236]

Latexes are usually copolymer systems of two or more monomers, and their total solids content, including polymers, emulsifiers, stabilizers etc. is 40-50% by mass. Most commercially available polymer latexes are based on elastomeric and thermoplastic polymers which form continuous polymer films when dried [88]. The major types of latexes include styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polyacrylic ester (PAE) and epoxy resin (EP) which are available both as emulsions and redispersible powders. They are widely used for bridge deck overlays and patching, as adhesives, and integral waterproofers. A brief description of the main types in current use is as follows [87]. [Pg.346]

Latex-modified mortars and concretes have become promising materials for preventing chloride-induced corrosion and for repairing damaged reinforced concrete structures. In Japan and the USA, latex-modified mortar is widely used as a construction material in bridge deck overlays and patching compounds, and for finishing and repairs [99]. A wide range of applications for sulfur concrete such as SUDICRETE provide many advantages. Included are industrial flooring, electrolytic vats, sumps, catch basins, tanks, sewage and waste impoundment ponds, bridge decks, pipes, etc., all of which can benefit from its extreme corrosion resistance. Epoxy seal coating was first applied as test patches in industrial plants in 1953. In 1957 epoxy polymer concrete was first used as a wearing course in the repair of popouts and spalled areas on the surfaces of various bridge decks in California (ACI, 1993). [Pg.60]

Epoxy resin injections have been successfully employed in the repair of delaminated bridge decks (Crompton et al., 1974). It is important to remember that the effectiveness of the repair process is dependent on the ability of the epoxy resin to penetrate, under appropriate pressure, into the fine cracks of the damaged concrete (Chang, 1981). [Pg.72]
