General-purpose developers

Most general-purpose developers in use today are metol-hydroquinone-based (MQ) rather than Phenidone-hydroquinone-based (PQ). This is in part because Phenidone has not been around that long as a developing agent, and also because Phenidone is more expensive. However, because of the allergic reaction to metol suffered by many photographers (Appendix 3 Pharmacopoeia), it is sometimes desirable to substitute Phenidone. [Pg.44]

The most widely used developer in the world, Kodak D-76, fells under the category of general-purpose developers. D-76 was formulated in 1927 byj. G. Capstaff of Kodak as a black and white movie film developer. However, not long afterwards better movie-film developing formulas were introduced and D-76 found use as a still-film developer. Eventually, it became the standard by which to judge all other developers. It was not that D-76 was the best developer ever formulated. It was more that a standard was needed and D-76 had the best all-around compromise of sharpness to grain with a full tonal range from black to white. [Pg.44]

A modular scanner system for NDE has been developed. It consists of a selection of individual electronics and motor module components, supported by scanner configuration and control software. The modules are used as standard building blocks for construction of job specific, dedicated scanners as well and general purpose scanners. Most general-purpose release agents have been developed for this market in part because of their low toxicity and chemical inertness and do not usually present health and safety problems. Some of the solvent dispersions require appropriate care in handling volatile solvents, and many supphers are offering water-based alternatives. Some of the sohds, particularly finely divided hydrophobic sohds, can also present inhalation problems. Some of the metallic soaps are toxic, although there is a trend away from the heavier, more toxic metals such as lead. The reactive type of release coating with monomers, prepolymers, and catalysts often presents specific handling difficulties. The challenges for visualization are at least twofold. Easter graphics hardware will be required to display and manipulate more complex data displays. A subsequent study of construction features of motors for Zone 2 locations, resulted in the development of nonsparking, type n motors. The basic design consideration for such motors is similar to that of type e motors but now there is no restriction in the limiting temperature, by 10°C, as in type e motors. In the early days of the commercial development of PVC, emulsion polymers were preferred for general purpose applications. This was because these materials exist in the form of the fine primary particles of diameter of the order of 0.1-1.0 p,m, which in the case of some commercial grades aggregate into hollow secondary particles or cenospheres with diameters of 30-100 p,m. These emulsion polymer particles have a high surface/volume ratio and fluxing and gelation with plasticisers is rapid. Fluorine-containing rubbers were originally developed during the search for fluid-resisting elastomers which could be used over a wide temperature range. Much of the initial developmental work was a result of contracts placed by the US Army and Air Force. In general, the thermoplastic elastomers have yet to achieve the aim of replacing general purpose vulcanised rubbers. They have replaced rubbers in some specialised oil-resistant applications but their greatest growth has been in developing materials of consistency somewhat between conventional rubbers and hard thermoplastics. Ruthenium, iridium and osmium The use of a fused cyanide electrolyte is the most effective means for the production of sound relatively thick coatings of ruthenium and iridium, but this type of process is unattractive and inconvenient for general purposes and does not therefore appear to have developed yet to a significant extent for industrial application. This is unfortunate, since these metals are the most refractory of the platinum group and in principle their properties might best be utilised in the form of coatings. At that time the properties of PEs were much lower than those presently available.
