Ionomer resins

Ionomer resins consisting of ethylene—methacrylic acid copolymers partially neutralized with sodium or zinc were commercially introduced in 1964 by Du Pont under the Sudyn trademark (1). More recently, a similar line of products, sold as Hi-Mdan resins, has been commercialized by Mitsui—Du Pont in Japan. lolon ionomeric resins, based on ethylene—acrylic acid, are produced by Exxon in Belgium. Ionomers containing about 1 mol % of carboxylate groups are offered by BP in Europe as Novex resins. Low molecular weight, waxy Aclyn ionomers are produced and sold by AHiedSignal. [Pg.404]

Ionomer resins are produced in multiple grades to meet market needs, and prospective customers are provided with information on key processing parameters such as melt-flow index. Nominal values for many other properties are Hsted in product brochures. The ASTM test methods developed for general-purpose thermoplastic resins are appHcable to ionomers. No special methods have been introduced specifically for the ionomers. [Pg.408]

The commercial grades available in the 1970s used either zinc or sodium as the cross-linking ion and ranged in melt flow index from 0.4 to 14. The main application of the ionomer resins has been for packaging film. The polymer is particularly useful in composite structures to provide an outer layer with good heat sealability. The puncture resistance of film based on ionomer film has the puncture resistance of a LDPE film of twice the gauge. [Pg.278]

Other uses of ionomer resins are in footwear. Low-cost grades have been used for parts of shoe heels whilst grades of increased flexibility are among a wide range of polymers contesting the market for ski boots. [Pg.278]

Initial materials of this super-tough type were blends of nylon 66 with an ionomer resin (see Chapter 11). More recent materials are understood to be blends of nylon 66 with a modified ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer rubber (EPDM rubber—also see Chapter 11). One such modification involves treatment of the rubber with maleic anhydride, this reacting by a Diels—Alder or other... [Pg.504]

For the sake of brevity detailed tables of all tests performed are shown for duPont ionomer resins only (Tables II, III, IV, VI to X). The other ethylene copolymers were similarly treated and evaluated. The effects of increasing radiation dosages on certain physical properties of selected duPont ionomers are shown graphically in Figures 1, 2, and 3. [Pg.167]

Numerous authors took advantage of the reactivity of double bonds towards ozone to prepare a-(0 functional oligomers usable in the synthesis of multiblock copolymers by copolycondensation, or in the synthesis of precursors of surfactants or ionomer resins. Results in this field of investigation are numerous, mainly in terms of industrial applications. [Pg.60]

The same calculation for the tetracid sample T 120 indicates 60 % of the chains have only one end coming to the micelle surface (conformation D in Fig. 2). The remaining carboxy groups inside the micelle might associate in the form of clusters, as demonstrated for ionomer resins ( ). [Pg.107]

The main driving force for the development of reinforced composite membranes has been the possibility of increasing both mechanical strength and dimensional stability, leading to the feasible production of very thin membranes. As mentioned in Section 10.2.2, as the cell resistance increases proportionally to the thickness, an improvement in PEMFC performance could easily be achieved by using thin, reinforced composite membranes. From a cost perspective, such thin reinforced composites would contain much less of the expensive ionomer resin than conventional membranes. [Pg.342]

A significant development is the appearance of supertough nylon plastics, which are blends in nylon-6,6 with other resins, such as an ionomer resin used in the initial grades or a modified ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer rubber (EPDM rubber) used in later grades. [Pg.459]
