Another ASTM test method. Potential Gum (D873), combines the existent gum and the oxidation stabihty tests to measure potential gum. A sample of gasoline is subjected to the oxidation stabihty test for 960 min, filtered to remove particulates, and then subjected to an existent gum test. The potential gum is expressed as the total (unwashed) gum in this test. 

Ionomer resins are produced in multiple grades to meet market needs, and prospective customers are provided with information on key processing parameters such as melt-flow index. Nominal values for many other properties are Hsted in product brochures. The ASTM test methods developed for general-purpose thermoplastic resins are appHcable to ionomers. No special methods have been introduced specifically for the ionomers. 

Floor poHshes typically are evaluated for gloss, appHcation and leveling properties, discoloration, sHp resistance, scratch resistance, heel-mark resistance, scuff resistance, damp-mopping and detergent resistance, repairabiHty, lack of sediment, and removabiHty (3). RecoatabiHty and formula stabiHty are also important. A review of test methods is available (35). More than 20 ASTM test methods for floor poHshes exist. From the standpoint of product safety, sHp resistance is a particularly important variable and many test methods are available (39).

The most important general test methods are issued as ASTM Test Methods and are periodically updated by the Polyurethane Raw Materials Analysis Committee (PURMAC) of the Society for the Plastics Industry (SPI). PURMAC has collected all pertinent analytical methods in a manual (271).

The flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off sufficient vapor to form an ignitable mixture with air near the surface of the liquid or within the vessel used. ASTM test methods include procedures using a closed cup (ASTM D56, ASTM DOS, and ASTM D3828), which is preferred, and an open cup (ASTM D92 and ASTM D1310). When several values are available, the lowest temperature is usually taken in order to assure safe operation of the process.

D-86 is a common ASTM test method that measures the boiling point of light liquid hydrocarbons at various volume percent fractions. The sample is distilled at atmospheric pressure, provided its final boiling point (end point) is less than 750°F.
