Over the past half-century, the utility of soil chemical analysis to archaeology has repeatedly been demonstrated. Numerous investigations accomplished since 1972 have both reaffirmed previous findings and indicated directions for future applications. The conclusion must be that reliable prospects of commercial applications can be made only for specific applications and specifications, and strongly depend on particular assumptions relating to membrane performance, process conditions and design and on particular future prospects which easily invalidate economic comparisons made today. 

The purpose of this review is to summarise the present status of this fascinating new area of endeavour, which has been termed directed evolution [8-10, 12,13]. We begin with a description of the relevant molecular biology methods, follow up with typical examples from the field of applications and end with concluding remarks concerning future prospects.
