Standard base

This experiment describes a method for determining the acidity, reported as an equivalent molarity of H2SO4, of rain water. Because the volume of standard base needed to titrate a sample of rain water is small, the analysis is done by a standard addition. A 10.00-mL sample of nominally 0.005 M H2SO4 is diluted with 100.0 mL of distilled water and standardized by titrating with 0.0100 M NaOH. A second 10.00-mL sample of the sulfuric acid is mixed with 100.0 mL of rain water and titrated with the same solution of NaOH. The difference between the two equivalence point volumes... [Pg.358]

In the United States, the Clean Air Act of 1990 requires plants to reduce emissions of 189 toxic and carcinogenic substances such as chlorine, chloroform, and 2,3,7,8-TCDD (dioxin) by 90% over the 1990s. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is working to develop standards based on maximum achievable control technologies and the industry has invested bUHons of doUars in capital investments to retrofit or rebuUd plant equipment to meet these measures. [Pg.283]

The moisture content of cmde sulfur is determined by the differential weight of a known sample before and after drying at about 110°C. Acid content is determined by volumetric titration with a standard base. Nonvolatile impurities or ash are determined by burning the sulfur from a known sample and igniting the residue to remove the residual carbon and other volatiles. [Pg.124]

Although stream standards are the most reaUstic in light of the use of the assimilative capacity of the receiving water, they are difficult to administer and control in an expanding industrial and urban area. The equitable allocation of poUutional loads for many industrial and municipal complexes also poses pohtical and economic difficulties. A stream standard based on minimum dissolved oxygen at low stream flow intuitively implies a minimum degree of treatment. One variation of stream standards is the specification of a maximum concentration of a poUutant (ie, the BOD) in the stream after mixing at a specified low flow condition. [Pg.221]

Acidity. Acidity is the base-neutrali2ing capacity of a sample of water. It is determined by titration of the sample with standard base to pH 8.3... [Pg.230]

Cesium metal is used for time standards based on the natural vibration of the Cs atom, which oscillates 9,192,631,770 times per second, and in high precision oscillators to synchronize fiber optic telecommunication. [Pg.378]

Automotive Refinish Paints. Paint for appHcation to automobiles after they have left the assembly plant is a significant market. Although some of this paint is used for fuU repainting, especiaHy of commercial tmcks, most is used for repairs after accidents, commonly just one door or part of a fender, and so forth. In order to be able to serve this market, it is necessary to supply paints that match the colors of aH cars and tmcks, both domestic and imported, that have been manufactured over the previous ten years or so. Repair paints for the larger volume car colors are manufactured and stocked, but for the smaller volume colors formulas are suppHed by the coatings manufacturer to the paint distributor that permit a reasonable color match for any car by mixing standard bases. [Pg.358]

Primary Standard a pollution standard based on human health effects. Primary standards are set for criteria air pollutants. See also secondary standard. [Pg.543]

Medieal surveillanee may need to address mueh more than the basie requirements in the HAZWOPER standard. Based on the presenee of hazards (sueh as lead, asbestos, and eareinogens), speeial types of medieal testing may be required. The oeeupational health physieian responsible for the medieal surveillanee program should work with the rest of the medieal surveillanee team to determine what forms of surveillanee are applieable for aetivities at eaeh worksite. [Pg.86]

Titrimetric analysis is a classical method for generating concentration-time data, especially in second-order reactions. We illustrate with data on the acetylation of isopropanol (reactant B) by acetic anhydride (reactant A), catalyzed by A-methyl-imidazole. The kinetics were followed by hydrolyzing 5.0-ml samples at known times and titrating with standard base. A blank is carried out with the reagents but no alcohol. The reaction is... [Pg.32]

Sufficient dry ether (approximately 100 ml.) is added to bring the organomagnesium products into solution. Aliquot portions of the solution are then added to a known volume of standard hydrochloric acid, and the excess acid is determined by titration with standard base. Yields determined in this way tend to be a few percent higher than those determined by collection of w-butane (Note 12). [Pg.116]

Neutralisation reactions, or addimetry and alkalimetry. These include the titration of free bases, or those formed from salts of weak acids by hydrolysis, with a standard acid (addimetry), and the titration of free acids, or those formed by the hydrolysis of salts of weak bases, with a standard base (alkalimetry). The reactions involve the combination of hydrogen and hydroxide ions to form water. [Pg.258]

Several reviews cover hetero-substituted allyllic anion reagents48-56. For the preparation of allylic anions, stabilized by M-substituents, potassium tm-butoxide57 in THF is recommended, since the liberated alcohol does not interfere with many metal exchange reagents. For the preparation of allylic anions from functionalized olefins of medium acidity (pKa 20-35) lithium diisopropylamide, dicyclohexylamide or bis(trimethylsilyl)amide applied in THF or diethyl ether are the standard bases with which to begin. Butyllithium may be applied advantageously after addition of one mole equivalent of TMEDA or 1,2-dimethoxyethane for activation when the functional groups permit it, and when the presence of secondary amines should be avoided. [Pg.234]

C04-0144. Vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid) is an acid whose formula is HCg H7 Og. When treated with strong base, it undergoes the following reaction HCg H7 0(5 + OH H7 Og + H2 O A pharmacist suspects that the vitamin C tablets received in a recent shipment are not pure. When a single 500.0-mg tablet is dissolved in 200.0 mL of water and titrated with a standard base that is 0.1045 M, it takes 24.45 mL to reach the stoichiometric point. Are the tablets pure If not, what is the mass percentage of impurities (Assume no impurity is either an acid or a base.)... [Pg.276]

Although epoxy resins are the standard base materials for printed circuit boards, other materials with reduced flammability such as polysiloxane can be used. [Pg.45]
