Full-face mask respirator

Escape (1) Self-contained breathing apparatus in demand or pressure-demand mode or (2) Full-face mask respirator with chin-style or front- or back-mounted type industrial size canister specifically approved for protection against formaldehyde. 

The use of disposable laboratory garments can eliminate the problem of cleaning chemically exposed garments and reduce the spread of chemical aerosols outside the laboratory. In addition to a laboratory coat, head and shoe covers and gloves (latex and neoprene types) should be provided. Each employee should be fitted with a full-face-mask respirator containing cartridges to remove dust and organic vapors.

Two examples of air purifying respirators are the MSA Ultra-Twin full-face respirator (Mine Safety Appliances Company [MSA], Pittsburgh, PA), and the 3M Model 6800 full-face mask (3M, St. Paul, MN). Figure 6.7 shows an air-purifying respirator. 

The Germans, like the British, also first used pads soaked in sodium carbonate and sodium thiosulphate, but then went on to develop a full face mask (which inspired the British Box designs). This was followed by a respirator, known simply as The German Mask , with a facepiece of natural rubber (later of oiled leather when rubber became unavailable), twin circular eyepieces with outer lenses of celluloid and inner lenses of coated gelatin, and a filter canister that screwed directly into the facepiece another design feature still used in most present-day respirators. 

Whilst every effort should be made to minimize the risk of lead emissions during the recycling process, it is prudent to ensure that operating personnel are suitably equipped with the appropriate respirators in the event of fugitive emissions or ventilation system failure. Personnel working in hot-metal areas should wear an airstream helmet (Fig. 16.12), because it also provides a full face mask to protect against metal and slag splashes. Dichloropropene An approved full face mask equipped with a fresh black canister meeting specifications of the U.S. Bureau of Mines for organic vapors, a full face self-contained breathing apparatus, or full face air-supplied respirator. Remove patient to fresh air, keep warm and quiet call physician immediately give artificial respiration if breathing has stopped. Immediately remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash skin with soap and plenty of water. For eyes, flush immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician.

In combination with a full-face mask, their use is possible in a contaminated atmosphere containing up to 1000 times the OEL, but with a half mask up to 100 times the OEL only. If the requirements according to EN 269 [6-83] are fulfilled, a fresh-air helmet or hood can be used up to 100 times the OEL. If warning devices indicating weakness or breakdown of the air supply are not present, the use of air line respirators is not allowed for protection against carcinogens, very toxic or radioactive substances, or micro-organisms and enzymes (see Table 6.29). 

In the case of this special type of self-contained respirator, the breathing air is taken from one or two canisters filled with compressed air. The technical requirements can be found in EN 137 [6-69]. The air pressure within the bottles is between 200 and 300 bar. Figure 6.42 shows the essential elements of a self-contained compressed air breathing apparatus. Because there is a small negative pressure within the mask during inhalation (only full-face masks are allowed), contaminated air could possibly get into the mask in the event of a leakage. To prevent any confusion, the connectors for such respirators are designed differently from those for over-pressure or normal pressure (see parts of EN 148 [6-84]). The air quality of compressed air botdes has to conform to EN 12021 [6-82]. 

A variation of the full-face respirator is the PAAP unit discussed in the previous section. In one version, the only difference is that it supplies a full-face mask instead of a half-face mask. Flowever, a useful variation is for the PAAP unit to supply air into the top of a hood which has a cape extending down to the shoulders. Some ofthesehave atransparentsection extending all the way around the upper part of the hood and provide an unusual degree offlexibility in vision and comfort, with a minimal loss in protection. This style accommodates both facial hair and glasses.

A NIOSH/MSHA approved pressure demand full face piece SCBA or supplied air respirators with escape air cylinder may be used. Alternatively, a full face piece, chemical canister air-purifying protective mask is acceptable for this purpose (See DA Pam 385-61 for determination of appropriate level.
