Even small spills and leaks (<0.45 kg) require extreme caution. Unless the spill is contained in a fume hood, do not remain in or enter the area unless equipped with full protective equipment and clothing. Self-contained breathing apparatus should be used if the odor of acrolein or eye irritation is sensed. Small spills may be covered with absorbant, treated with aqueous alkalies, and flushed with water. [Pg.129]

Exposure to formic acid vapor causes irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract. The TLV/TWA occupational exposure limit is 5 ppm (40). Self-contained breathing apparatus should be used when there is a risk of exposure to high vapor concentrations. [Pg.505]

As an emergency treatment, the washing of the contaminated body parts with a 5% thiosulfate solution is recommended. If swallowed, gastric lavage with 5% solution of thiosulfate, followed by saline catharsis should be accompHshed. If pulmonary signs are severe, oxygen should be suppHed with intermittent positive-pressure breathing apparatus. [Pg.365]

Because of the delay in decomposition of the peroxide, oxygen evolution follows carbon dioxide sorption. A catalyst is required to obtain total decomposition of the peroxides 2 wt % nickel sulfate often is used. The temperature of the bed is the controlling variable 204°C is required to produce the best decomposition rates (18). The reaction mechanism for sodium peroxide is the same as for lithium peroxide, ie, both carbon dioxide and moisture are required to generate oxygen. Sodium peroxide has been used extensively in breathing apparatus. [Pg.487]

The large candles used by the U.S. Navy have been produced ia the United States by three companies. Mine Safety AppHances Company, Puritan-Beimett Corporation, and Scott Aviation. These sell for 50— 60. Production is less than 10,000/yr. Smaller candles incorporated ia breathing apparatus are produced by equipment suppHers. Production quantities are tied to the number of complete units and the candles are a small percentage of the total price. Production for aircraft oxygen supply during a decompression incident is about 50,000 units per year. In the United States, Puritan-Beimett and Scott Aviation are the primary suppHers as is Draeger in Germany. [Pg.488]

Alkylamiaes are toxic. Both the Hquids and vapors can cause severe irritations to mucous membranes, eyes, and skin. Protective butyl mbber gloves, aprons, chemical face shields, and self-contained breathing apparatus should be used by aH personnel handling alkylamiaes. Amines are flammable and the lower mol wt alkylamiaes with high vapor pressures at ordiaary temperatures have low flash poiats. Amines should be handled ia weH-veatilated areas only after eliminating potential sources of ignition. [Pg.201]

Prevention of carbon monoxide poisoning is best accompHshed by providing good ventilation where contamination is a problem. If good ventilation is not possible, a self-contained breathing apparatus, such as a Scott Air-Pak, must be used. The use of gas masks containing an adsorbent is generally not recommended since it is difficult to know when the adsorbent is exhausted. [Pg.59]

Flammability = 4, ie, very flammable gas, very volatile, and materials that in the form of dusts or mists form explosive mixtures when dispersed in air Health = 2, ie, hazardous to health, but may be entered freely with self-contained breathing apparatus Reactivity = 0, ie, is normally stable when under fire-exposure conditions and is not reactive with water... [Pg.3]

Personal Protective Equipment. Personal protective and emergency safety equipment should not be reHed on as the primary protection from aHyl chloride. Prevention of exposure should be considered the preferred precautionary measure. Where the exposure guideline may be gready exceeded, an approved positive-pressure air suppHed or self-contained breathing apparatus with fuH facepiece should be used (51). [Pg.35]

Are emergency self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or escape air packs available in the work areas involved m the ABC Co. processing ... [Pg.156]

Protective clothing, goggles, face shields, hard hats, work gloves, rubber gloves, aprons, hoods, gas masks (with spare canisters), and self-contained breathing apparatus on hand... [Pg.331]

An employer has speeifie obligations to ensure all eontrol measures are kept in an effieient state, effieient working order and good repair. Engineering eontrols should be examined and tested at suitable intervals, e.g. loeal exhaust ventilation equipment must be tested at least onee every fourteen months, and more often for proeesses speeified in Table 5.23, and a reeord kept. Respirators and breathing apparatus must also be examined frequently and the eheeks reeorded. [Pg.115]

Heterogeneous eatalysts are often loeated at the top of a reaetor and manipulated with temporary handling equipment. To avoid exposure to toxie dust, loeal ventilation should be installed if this is impraetieable, serupulous use of personal proteetive equipment and rigid eomplianee with systems-of-work are essential. Respiratory equipment may inelude self-eontained or line-fed breathing apparatus. [Pg.119]

The special precautions appropriate for entry into confined spaces are summarized in Chapter 13. In fires, evacuation of burning buildings, prohibition on re-entry and the use of self-contained breathing apparatus by fire-fighters are key precautions. [Pg.123]

Entry into a confined space requires strict control (page 417). Whenever oxygen deficiency may be encountered air quality checks should be made and appropriate breathing apparatus used. [Pg.125]

This should be eonsulted for the eolour eoding of gas mixtures used for inhalation e.g. medieal and breathing apparatus mixtures eontaining oxygen. [Pg.271]

From inhalation at pressures above atmospheric, used in tunnelling or diving, or from breathing apparatus or resuscitation equipment, if the pressure is too high or exposure is prolonged. This may cause symptoms from pain to dyspnoea, disorientation and unconsciousness it may be fatal. [Pg.275]

Use approved personal protection as appropriate, including self-contained breathing apparatus and associated training. [Pg.298]
