The recessed type of press is similar to the plate and frame type except that the use of frames is obviated by recessing the ribbed surface of the plates so that the individual filter chambers are formed between successive plates. Filtration. Filtration can include filter presses, rotary drum vacuum filters (RDVF), belt filters, and variations on synthetic membrane filtration equipment, such as filter cartridges, pancake filters, or plate and frame filter presses. These processes typically operate in a batch mode when the filter chamber is filled up or the vacuum drum cake is exhausted, a new batch must be started. This type of filtration is also called dead-end filtration because the only fluid flow is through the membrane itself. Due to the small size of cells and their compressible nature, typical cell cakes have low permeability and filter aids, such as diatomaceous earths, perlite, or other mined materials are added to overcome this limitation. Moreover, the presence of high solids and viscous polymeric fermentation byproducts can limit filtration fluxes without the use of filter aids. [Pg.1331]

Bleaching. The oil is pumped to a slurry tank passing through a preheater at a temperature of 90-95°C. The oil, dried and deaerated under vacuum, receives a predetermined dose of bleaching earth-activated carbon (10 1 ratio), agitated for 20-30 min for the removal of color bodies and other adsorbable impurities. Industrially, styrene polymerizations are carried out in bulk, in emulsion, in solution, and in suspension. The clear plastic is generally prepared by mass polymerization. Because polystyrene is soluble in the monomer, mass polymerization, when carried out to completion, results in a tremendous increase in melt viscosity. To avoid this, when styrene is polymerized in bulk in an agitated kettle, the reaction is only carried out to 30-40% conversion. After that, the viscous syrup is transferred to another type of reactor for the completion of the reaction. According to one early German patent, polymerization is completed in a plate and frame filter press. Water circulating through the press removes the heat of the reaction and the solid polymer is formed inside the frames. This process is still used in some places. [Pg.248]

Plate-and-frame filter presses. One of the important types of filters is the plate-and-frame filter press, which is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 14.2-3a. These filters consist of plates and frames assembled alternatively with a filter cloth over each side of the plates. The plates have channels cut in them so that clear filtrate liquid can drain down along each plate. The feed slurry is pumped into the press and flows through the duct into each of the open frames so that slurry fills the frames. The filtrate flows through the filter cloth and the solids build up as a cake on the frame side of the cloth.
