Hydraulic press

Mechanical Pressing. Historically, the first large commercial production of oils from seeds and nuts was carried out using labor-intensive hydraulic presses. These were gradually replaced by more efficient mechanical and screw presses. Solvent extraction was developed for extraction of seeds having low oil content. For seeds and nuts having higher oil content, a combination of a screw press followed by solvent extraction is a common commercial practice (prepress—solvent extraction). [Pg.129]

Those that cure well between these temperatures are often referred to as intermediate set. Cold set types naturally set much faster at intermediate temperatures. Cold pressing of plywood is usually done in a hydraulic press. The press may then be opened, the clamped assembly removed and allowed to stay under the pressure of the clamps for at least four hours to set the glue. [Pg.326]

At one time the small fragments of amber produced during the fabrication and machining operations were used to produce varnishes. In 1880 they were first used in the production of Ambroid. A typical method of preparation of 5- and 7-ply plywood panels is by pressing at room temperature and the simultaneous use of a one-step exothermic heat gluing/ monomer curing technique. Prior to monomer impregnation, all veneer samples were conditioned at room temperature. The assembly was compressed to 1.03 MPa (150 psi) between steel plates in a hydraulic press, and the steel plates fastened with a pair of bolts and nuts at both ends. [Pg.581]

This process is carried out at low pressure and at ambient temperature. The fiber is placed in the tool in the form of a mat and the resin is poured in. The mold is closed, and the resin spreads through the reinforcement thereby impregnating and fully wetting out the fiber strands. The process is done on an hydraulic press. Add wood furnish (384 g, moisture content 6.02%) to the bowl of a rotary blade paddle mixer (such as a Kitchen-Aid KSM90) and agitate at the lowest speed setting. Add Mondur 541 (7.39 g, 1.9% w/w, a polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate of 31.5% NCO, Bayer) dropwise over a 5-min period using a disposable syringe. The resin-coated furnish is evenly spread inside the form and another metal plate is placed on top. All parts of the form and plates are presprayed with mold release. The completed form assembly is placed into a hydraulic press (such as a model PW-22 manufactured by Pasadena Hydraulics) with platens heated at 350°F. The furnish is then pressed between the two form plates to a thickness of j in. Press controls are used to ensure consistency of board thickness.
