Other Mining

Folldal is located in Central Norway (Fig. 2) and has operated a mine since 1748. Mining for Cu, Zn, and S continued for almost 200 years, and a community became established around the mine. After 1941, however, the main production shifted to other mines, including Hjerkinn, some distance away in the Dovre Mountain massif. 

Besides the above, there are several other mines of secondary importance, from which a considerable quantity of coal is anuuaJIy extracted. These, with their area, thickness, the number of workable seams, et ceterat are exhibited in the table in previous page, which is extended to embrace Great Britain and Ireland. 

Cyprian aes is itself of two kinds according to Pliny— coronarium and regulare, both of them ductile. The former can be made, he says, into thin leaves and is therefore probably copper itself. In other mines, they prepare the regulare and also the caldarium which breaks when hammered, but all kinds if sufficiently melted and heated will become malloable. 

Its properties are as follows cartridge d, 1.67g/cc vel of deton, 4700m/sec and Trauzl test value, 340cc. Territ is comparable in properties to some low-freezing Dynamites and is safe to handle. Its brisance is such that in blasting coal or other mining operations, no small dust particulates are formed... 

Malaysia (Williams, 2001), Thailand (Williams, 2001), Philippines (Williams, 2001), Brazil (Williams, 2001 Borba, Figueiredo and Matschullat, 2003 Matschullat et al., 2000), Hungary (Odor et al., 1998), Tanzania (Bowell et al., 1995), Zimbabwe (Williams, 2001), and Switzerland (Pfeifer et al., 2004). Williams (2001) is an exceptionally broad survey of arsenic in mine drainage samples from 34 sites in Asia, Africa, and South America. The arsenic concentrations of the waters ranged from 0.005 to 72 mgL-1. Like most other mine drainage results, the majority of samples in Williams (2001) contained less than 5 mgL-1 of arsenic. The arsenic was also well oxidized. As(V) represented more than 50 % of the dissolved inorganic arsenic at 29 of the 34 sites and at least 18 of the sites had more than 95 % of their dissolved arsenic as As(V) (Williams, 2001, 269-270). The pH values of the samples ranged from 0.52 to 10. Only 3 of the 10 sites with arsenic concentrations above 1 mgL-1 had pH values below 4 (Williams, 2001, 269-270). 

Filtration. Filtration can include filter presses, rotary drum vacuum filters (RDVF), belt filters, and variations on synthetic membrane filtration equipment, such as filter cartridges, pancake filters, or plate and frame filter presses. These processes typically operate in a batch mode when the filter chamber is filled up or the vacuum drum cake is exhausted, a new batch must be started. This type of filtration is also called dead-end filtration because the only fluid flow is through the membrane itself. Due to the small size of cells and their compressible nature, typical cell cakes have low permeability and filter aids, such as diatomaceous earths, perlite, or other mined materials are added to overcome this limitation. Moreover, the presence of high solids and viscous polymeric fermentation byproducts can limit filtration fluxes without the use of filter aids.

Besides borehole sealants for the oil industry, CBS may have other mining and civil engineering applications. These include reinforcement of mined out structures, water shut off, and underground and underwater construction, etc.

In the United States, scandium is obtained from the waste products of other mining operations. It is also imported from countries such as China, Russia, and Ukraine. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), scandium was not mined in the United States in 2008.
