Forming a Committee

Form a committee that is suited for your business. It should be large enough to represent different parts of the organization. All committees [Pg.125]

Try to have equal numbers of management and non-supervisory employees on the committee. Choose middle management members who can get things done. One method is to pick one employee, have that employee pick another employee, and so on. With this method, or if employees are picked at random, there is no perceived bias from management. [Pg.126]

Make sure that the safety professional serves as a resource for the committee and is not the leader of the committee. [Pg.126]

If your workplace has a union, allow them to choose non-supervisory members. If your workplace is not unionized, you may want to consult with a qualified labor relations professional on the best way to obtain employee participation if you decide to use a committee [7]. [Pg.126]

One word of caution Each committee must have a written description of its intent charter. This description will define exactly what the committee will be doing. In addition, it will allow you to perform some level of measurement on work that is accomplished. [Pg.126]

The next step in the procedure is to form a committee comprised of people with expertise specific to the process and chemistry involved. The committee could also include an industrial hygienist, an environmentalist, the process operators, a consultant, and others. The committee should not contain more than a dozen individuals. [Pg.470]

The city council formed a committee to simplify several dozen... [Pg.12]

These circumstances make the continued use of available chemical reference materials and the development of new reference materials essential. The National Research Council formed a committee in April 2001 to provide a comprehensive review of chemical reference material status and needs for those elements and compounds essential for investigating ocean processes. In addition, the committee was charged to provide advice on the elements and compounds requiring the development of reference materials and/or reference material improvement. Specifically, the committee was charged with the following tasks ... [Pg.17]

The Academy was an institution with rules and bureaucracy. When faced with a problem, its members often resorted to the bureaucratic solution of forming a committee. A committee was appointed to look into the language of chemistry, with Guyton as one of its members and with Lavoisier as secretary. The secretary of a committee prepares the minutes, providing a written record of the committee s deliberations and recommendations. (Perhaps we should include committees as another of the tools of revolution.) In 1787,... [Pg.68]

While individuals able to attract national attention continued to speak to the paper problem, a collective voice was still to be heard. Seeking an improvement in newsprint, the American Library Association (ALA) formed a Committee on the Deterioration of Newsprint Paper in 1911 (3). The committee worked with the American Newspaper Publishers Association in surveying publishers concerning the possibility of special library editions. Some positive responses were received, but when the ALA committee surveyed libraries, they found most were interested only in permanent files of local papers. The committee concluded that special newspaper editions were possible, if libraries were willing to pay for such editions. Perhaps as a result of the consciousness raising of this... [Pg.10]

A further approach to designing the network topology is to construct a complex network from several single network modules. In a network committee, several networks are trained together to form a committee (Perrone, 1994). A committee or jury decision, given by a weighted combination of the predictions of the members, can yield better... [Pg.90]

The Agent Orange Act of 1991 required the US Secretary of Veterans Affairs to request an evaluation of the health effects of Agent Orange in Vietnam Veterans by the National Academy of Sciences. The Institute of Medicine (lOM) formed a Committee to Review the Health Effects in Vietnam Veterans of Exposure to Herbicides . The Committee initiated a series of studies to evaluate cancer and noncancer... [Pg.569]

The American Academy of Pediatrics formed a Committee on Drugs to examine ethical issues of pediatric studies for its members and for the guidance of IRBs dealing with pediatric studies. The Committee released its report in 1995. This report (Committee Drugs, American Academy of Pediatrics) is very comprehensive, but amongst its many recommendations the following areas are highlighted. [Pg.227]

In response to this initiative, the academy formed a committee of distinguished scientists, chaired by Dr. Paul Berg of Stanford University. These scientists prepared a letter (2) that appeared simultaneously in Science, Nature, and the Proceeiings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Pg.303]

In 1990, the U.S. Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (now called PhRMA) formed a committee to define BPC validation concepts (2). This committee s efforts culminated in 1995 when they issued their finished draft. This document served as a guide to the authors in the development of this chapter. Of necessity, considerable clarification and expansion of the material contained has been necessary to complete this effort. [Pg.204]

According to him, in 1967 the President of the American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC) asked Whistler to explore the possibility of creating a Carbohydrate Division. Thereupon, he formed a committee, whieh quiekly developed and presented to the AACC Board of Directors a statement of purpose and operating procedures for the Division, and received authority fiom it to form a Division. He served as its first Chair. [Pg.12]

The final link in the Manhattan Project s farflung network was the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The laboratory that designed and fabricated the first atomic bombs, codenamed Project Y, began to take shape in ling 1942 when Conant suggested to Bush that the Office of Scientific and Research Development and the Army form a committee to study bomb development. Bush agreed and forward the recommendation to Vice President Wallace, Secretary of War... [Pg.35]

The VDS was first designed to facilitate and classify the outpatients in a hospital. During the development of the VDS, we have set a team of collaborators in various hospitals. We formed a committee of medical doctors who accepted collaboration, thus allowing us to utilize their experiences in our system. The VDS reads the physical data from different sensors and extracts mental analysis from facial expressions, etc. The avatar intending... [Pg.441]

Decision makers at the National Safety Council (NSC) gave authority to this author to form a committee to study the feasibility of the NSC promoting the idea of having safety and environmental needs incorporated in the design process. In 1995, the outcome was that the NSC established the Institute for Safety through Design. [Pg.391]

In 1892, the first safety committee was formed in a steel mill to produce a countermeasure for a flywheel that had broken apart and struck a worker. Investigations and countermeasure planning can be approached from this aspect as well. The investigator must be able to form a committee of sorts to cover the possible angles of the investigation and determine all levels of cause. Good investigators involve experts in order not to miss possibilities. [Pg.413]

Unlike Errington, Johns had his own cancer clinic where he could give his machine a tryout. Errington made arrangements with Ivan Smith in London to ensure that there would be a home for his machine. The Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation had formed a committee earlier in the year to consider installing super-voltage equipment in at least one of the eight provincial radiotherapy facilities. The committee recommended purchase of such equipment but modified its plans to allow for installation of a cobalt-60 BTU in Smith s clinic in London as well. [Pg.66]

In order to address these two issues, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) formed a committee whose members had expertise in tank car design,... [Pg.128]

Form a committee of government and industry representatives to explore appropriate avenues for cooperative efforts in developing uniform safety-related standards for trucks. [Pg.140]

Although the ACS national office had moved to Washington, New York City was the crossroads in the dyes trade. In response to the hue and cry of the superficial hack-writer, as Whitaker described publicity over the shortages, the chair of the section, Allen Rogers (of the Pratt Institute), formed a committee of seven with representation from manufacturers... [Pg.209]

The American Chemical Society hardly ignored questions of professional and economic status. In 1948 there was a proposal to make the AIC a division of the ACS for professional affairs. Twelve years earlier, the ACS had formed a Committee for Improving the Professional Status of the Chemist, and the 1972 establishment of a Division of Professional Relations testifies to continuing concern among the ACS rank-and-file with the problems of professional life. For ACS activities in this area in the 1930 s and 1940s, see III, Browne and Weeks, 1952, 228-248. [Pg.32]
