Permanent records, written or electronic, should exist for each stored product indicating recommended storage conditions, any precautions to be observed and retest dates. Pharmacopoeial requirements and current national regulations concerning labels and containers should be respected at all times. 

The first records, written on clay tablets in cuneiform, were from Mesopotamia and date from about 2600 BCE, while Egyptian medicine dates from about 2900 BCE, with the best known Egyptian pharmaceutical record being the Ebers Papyrus (1500 BCE). The existence of bioactive compounds in plants and other natural sources has been known for millennia, with history recording the use of such poisons as hemlock, used by Socrates in his court-ordered suicide and the infusion of yew used by a Gallic chieftain to avoid capture by Julius Caesar. The medicinal use of natural products, particularly those from plants, is also very ancient. The first known records, written in cuneiform on hundreds of clay tablets, are from Mesopotamia and date from about 2600 BC. Amongst the approximately 1000 plant-derived substances that were used are some that are still in use today for the treatment of ailments, ranging from coughs and colds to parasitic infections and inflammation. Also of value is the study of the history of technology (24,25) that affords insights into the history of the development of civilization. The eadiest existing written records, treatises of crafts people and artists on the techniques and materials with which they worked, date back to medieval times (26—29). For prehistoric human activities, the record is in the objects which remain, and only through the study of these can knowledge in this regard be furthered. 

The most ancient uses of spices appear to be therapeutic in nature. The use of spices was common in China but tittle, if any, authentic Chinese records exist to confirm this. According to Chinese myths and legends, Shen Nung, the Divine Cultivator, founded Chinese medicine and discovered the curative powers of many herbs. He is said to have described more than 100 plants in a treatise reportedly written in 2700 BC. It has been shown, however, that no written language was available in China at that time. Although some of the herbal uses in the treatise go back several centuries BC, the work seems to have been produced by unknown authors in the first century AD. Other records on the use of cassia and ginger are known to have been written in the fifth and fourth centuries BC, in the latter case by Confucius.

Level gauging has existed at least as long as written history markings on the walls of Egyptian temples show that as early as 3000 years ago humans tracked the level of water for hydrologic data. These nilometers are some of the first recorded uses of systems to measure level (1). 

Record keeping is an essential requisite of good market research. In the chemical field, call reports or visit reports are usually written by the interviewer and become part of the report in some cases and certainly should become part of the company or consultant files for future reference. Obviously, the call report serves a valuable purpose in the analysis and writing stage. Some market researchers have also found that cross-referencing call reports over a period of time allows rapid identification of the respondents who have demonstrated the greatest abiUty in forecasting their company needs and/or the needs of their industry.
