The increase in boiling point caused by an increase in pressure is the principle used in the ordinary pressure cooker. It also produces more than 100,000 t of fish meal, fish oil, and fish products each year. Pish meal production worldwide in 1986 was estimated at 6.23 x 10 t, which with the 125 x 10 t of meat and bone meal plus 6.67 x 10 t of feather meal and poultry by-product meal (6) is the primary source of animal proteins used by the pet food industry. [Pg.150]

About 264,000 metric tons of elemental capacity is available in North America, plus another 79,000 t (P equivalent) of purified wet phosphoric acid (14). Therrtial Sterilization of Pouches of Beef. Methodology for food thermoprocessing in cylindrical metal containers assured food sterility in flexible packages. Beef slices (1.25 cm thick) were steam cooked to an internal temperature of 72°C and vacuum sealed in pouches to give a fill of 120 g. These pouches of beef were processed in a standard retort with complete water circulation and a superimposed air pressure of 1.7 X 105 Pa. The retort schedule—a 40-minute cook at 118°C plus come-up time followed by a 30-minute cooling time—achieved a F0 (lethality value) of 6. [Pg.96]

This analysis has demonstrated that pesticide use in the world could be reduced by approximately 50% without any reduction in crop yields (in some cases increased yields) or the food supply.
