Externally corrected external corrections

As will be demonstrated in Chapter 4, however, the presence of micropores distorts the Type II isotherm in a sense which is reflected in a much increased value of the constant c. In such cases the value of c is no guide at all to the course of the isotherm on the external surface. Consequently the appropriate criterion for choosing the correct f-curve for a particular system is the similarity in chemical properties and not in c-values l>etween the solid under test and the reference solid. [Pg.94]

To convert the core area into the pore area ( = specific surface, if the external area is negligible) necessitates the use of a conversion factor R which is a function not only of the pore model but also of both r and t (cf. p. 148). Thus, successive increments of the area under the curve have to be corrected, each with its appropriate value of R. For the commonly used cylindrical model,... [Pg.171]

M HNO3. The concentration of Cu and Zn in the diluted supernatant is determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy using an air-acetylene flame and external standards. Copper is analyzed at a wavelength of 324.8 nm with a slit width of 0.5 nm, and zinc is analyzed at 213.9 nm with a slit width of 1.0 nm. Background correction is used for zinc. Results are reported as micrograms of Cu or Zn per gram of FFDT. [Pg.421]

The following data were obtained for a set of external phosphate standards. All absorbances have been corrected for a reagent blank. [Pg.657]

The goals of quality assessment are to determine when a system has reached a state of statistical control to detect when the system has moved out of statistical control and, if possible, to suggest why a loss of statistical control has occurred so that corrective actions can be taken. For convenience, the methods of quality assessment are divided into two categories internal methods that are coordinated within the laboratory and external methods for which an outside agency or individual is responsible. The incorporation of these methods into a quaKty assurance program is covered in Section 15C. [Pg.708]

Correlation of markets for a product with external factors is a relatively quick and easy method of analysis, useful if the markets are correctable with factors such as population, gross national product (GNP), Federal Reserve Board (FRB), index, etc. [Pg.535]

Ma.rine. In the presence of an electrolyte, eg, seawater, aluminum and steel form a galvanic cell and corrosion takes place at the interface. Because the aluminum superstmcture is bolted to the steel bulkhead in a lap joint, crevice corrosion is masked and may remain uimoticed until replacement is required. By using transition-joint strips cut from explosion-welded clads, the corrosion problem can be eliminated. Because the transition is metaHurgicaHy bonded, there is no crevice in which the electrolyte can act and galvanic action caimot take place. Steel corrosion is confined to external surfaces where it can be detected easily and corrected by simple wire bmshing and painting. [Pg.151]

Arrhythmias. The first solution to cardiovascular problems arising from arrhythmias came about as a result of a complication caused by open-heart surgery. During procedures to correct congenital defects in children s hearts, the electrical conduction system often became impaired, and until it healed, the heart could not contract sufficiently without outside electrical stimulation. A system that plugged into a wall outlet was considered adequate until an electrical storm knocked out power, lea ding to the development of the first battery-powered external pacemaker. [Pg.181]

Acceptable comprehensive methods of analysis are analytical, model-test, and chart methods, which evaluate for the entire piping system under consideration the forces, moments, and stresses caused by bending and torsion from a simultaneous consideration of terminal and intermediate restraints to thermal expansion and include all external movements transmitted under thermal change to the piping by its terminal and intermediate attachments. Correction factors, as provided by the details of these rules, must be applied for the stress intensification of curved pipe and branch connections and may be applied for the increased flexibihty of such component parts. [Pg.1001]

The three signals are fed into an oscilloscope as vertical-, horizontal-, and external-intensity marker input. The keyphazor appears as a bright spot on the screen. In cases where the orbit obtained is completely circular, the maximum amplitude of vibration occurs in the direction of the keyphazor. To estimate the magnitude of the correction mass, a trial-and-error process is initiated. With the rotor perfectly balanced, the orbit finally shrinks to a... [Pg.591]

Since the reliability of gas turbines in the power industry has been lower than desired in recent years because of hot-corrosion problems, techniques have been developed to detect and control the parameters that cause these problems. By monitoring the water content and corrosive contaminant in the fuel line, any changes in fuel quality can be noted and corrective measures initiated. The concept here is that Na contaminants in the fuel are caused from external sources such as seawater thus, by monitoring water content, Na content is automatically being monitored. This on-line technique is adequate for lighter distillate fuels. For heavier fuels, a more complete analysis of the fuel should be carried out at least once a month using the batch-type system. The data should be input directly to the computer. The water and corrosion detecting systems also operate in conjunction with the batch analysis for the heavier fuels. [Pg.671]

There are two types of external documents, those in the public domain and those produced by specific customers. In some cases the issues of both types of documents are stated in the contract and therefore it is important to ensure that you possess the correct version before you commence work. Where the customer specifies the issue status of public domain documents that apply you need a means of preventing their withdrawal from use in the event that they are revised during the term of the contract. Where the issue status of public domain documents is not specified you may either have a free choice as to the issue you use or, as is more likely, you may need to use the latest issue in force. Where this is the case you will need a means of being informed when such documents are revised to ensure that you can obtain the latest version. The ISO 9000 series for instance is reviewed every five years, so could well be revised at five-year intervals. With national and international legislation the situation is rather different as these can change at any time. You need some means of alerting yourself to changes that affect you and there are several methods from which to choose ... [Pg.288]

The standard does not make it clear whether these requirements apply to nonconformities detected while the supplier is responsible for the product or after the supplier s responsibility ceases, as is the case with nonconformity reports received from customers. Reports of nonconformities are also addressed under Corrective Action in clause 4.14 but it is assumed that in this case the standard is concerned with external reports of nonconformities. [Pg.433]

All nonconformities are caused, all causes within your control can be avoided - all that is needed is concerted action to prevent recurrence. There are three types of corrective action product-related, process-related, and system-related. Product-related nonconformities can be either internal or external, as addressed previously, and you will have nonconformity reports to analyze. Process-related nonconformities may arise out of a product nonconformity but if you expect something less than 100% yield from the process, the reject items may not be considered nonconformities. They may be regarded as scrap. By analyzing the process you can find the cause of low yield and improve... [Pg.456]

Your corrective action procedures need to cover the collection and analysis of product nonconformity reports and the collection and analysis of process data to reveal process nonconformities. The corrective action provisions of your internal audit procedure need to address the causes of the nonconformities and you will need an additional procedure to deal with external audits, investigating the cause of any nonconformities and recording the results. The procedure also needs to cover the investigation of customer complaints as the previous requirement only deals with the handling of complaints. [Pg.457]

When the MFA is used in absence of the external field (J,- = 0) the Lagrange multipliers //, are assumed to give the actual density, p, known by construction. In presence of the field the MFA gives a correction Spi to the density p,. By using the linear response theory we can establish a hnear functional relation between J, and 8pi. The fields Pi r) can be expressed in term of a new field 8pi r) defined according to Pi r) = pi + 8pi + 8pi r). Now, we may perform a functional expansion of in terms of 8pi f). If this expansion is limited to a quadratic form in 8pj r) we get the following result [32]... [Pg.813]

As a result, the electromotive force (EMF) of the cell is zero In the presence of fluoride ions, cerium(IV) forms a complex with fluoride ions that lowers the cerium(IV)-cerium(IIl) redox potential The inner half-cell is smaller, and so only 5 mL of cerium(IV)-cenum (III) solution is added To the external half-cell, 50 mL of the solution is added, but the EMF of the cell is still zero When 10 mL of the unknown fluonde solution is added to the inner half-cell, 100 mL of distilled water IS added to the external half-cell The solution in the external half-cell is mixed thoroughly by turning on the stirrer, and 0 5 M sodium fluonde solution is added from the microburet until the null point is reached The quantity of known fluonde m the titrant will be 10 times the quantity of the unknown fluoride sample, and so the microburet readings must be corrected prior to actual calculations... [Pg.1026]

Internal Verification Systems or procedures are in place for reviewing performance against standards and milestones and reporting departures from established (external or internal) standards. Exceptions and deficiencies are corrected in a timely manner. [Pg.78]

The worker closed valve B very frequently as part of his everyday job. The operation of A was embedded within a long sequence of other operations that were similar to those normally associated with valve B. The worker knew that he had to close A in this case, but he was distracted by a colleague and reverted back to the strong habit of operating B. Possible cause intrusion of a strong habit due to external distraction (correct intention but wrong execution). [Pg.69]

The external error mode is the observable form of the error. This can often be classified in several ways. In the current example the external error modes were "right action on wrong object" (wrong valve closed) and "action omitted" (the correct valve was not closed). The exact form of the external error mode will obviously depend on the nature of the task. A comprehensive classification of external error modes is provided in Chapter 4. [Pg.101]

There are a few other correction procedures that may be considered as extrapolation schemes. The Scaled External Correlation (SEC) and Scaled All Correlation (SAC) metiiods scale tire correlation energy by a factor such that calculated dissociation energy agrees with the experimental value. [Pg.169]

An expansion in powers of 1 /c is a standard approach for deriving relativistic correction terms. Taking into account electron (s) and nuclear spins (1), and indicating explicitly an external electric potential by means of the field (F = —V0, or —— dAjdt if time dependent), an expansion up to order 1/c of the Dirac Hamiltonian including the... [Pg.210]
