Alcohol ethoxylates (C6-C18) Ethoxylates Synonyms ethoxylated alcohol, fatty alcohol ethoxy-late, alcohol ethoxylate, polyoxyethylene alcohol ether, polyethylene glycol alcohol ether. Surfactant alcohol ethoxylates and their derivatives are used by the detergent manufacturing industry as active ingredients in industrial and consumer products such as soaps, detergents, and other cleaning products. 

We have investigated the distribution of a phosphated ethoxy-lated alcohol, neutralized with either an amine or an ethanolamine in crude oil and formation water (Figure 4) and found also a constant partition coefficient up to a certain value. 

Sulphosuccinate surfactants are of two main types, namely monoesters of C12-C18 alcohols and diesters of C6-Cg alcohols. Monoesters of ethoxy-lated alcohols and monoalkanolamides also exist. Both types may be synthesised by addition of sodium sulphite or ammonium bisulphite across the double bond of a mono- or diester of maleic acid. In the latter case the product may contain small quantities of mono- or dialkyl aspartate.

The average composition of the hydrophobe is generally determined by NMR spectroscopy. Common phosphate esters cannot be analyzed directly or as derivatives by gas chromatography because they are not volatile below their decomposition temperature. While HPLC seems appropriate for direct analysis of phosphates, very few applications have been published, and these relate only to determination of relative content of monoester and diester (see Chapter 7). Supercritical fluid chromatography of the methyl ester derivatives has been demonstrated to show the homolog distribution of phosphate esters of ethoxy-lated alcohols (125). 

Ethylene oxide is an important intermediate chemical not only for the production of nonionic surfactants like fatty alcohol ethoxylates, alkylphenol ethoxy lates, or propylene oxide/ethylene oxide block copolymers, but also for manufacturing of anionic surfactants like alcohol ether sulfates. 

More recent publications on sulfosuccinates have confirmed the minimal or close to zero skin and eye irritation caused by these products. In a general screening of product safety evaluation methods the authors [16] rejected the sulfosuccinate from further consideration in the statistical analysis of experimental data (variance analysis) because the product had not shown any irritation in the Duhring-Chamber test. The sulfosuccinate (based on fatty alcohol ethoxy late) was tested in a screening with 14 other surfactants, namely, alkyl sulfates, sulfonates, ether sulfates, and a protein fatty acid condensation product.

SEC-RI/UV has also been used to analyse some 26 thioorganotin compounds, organotin carboxylates and chlorides, essentially PVC stabilisers, and some of their main by-products and related compounds (thioesters and dithioesters, n-alkanes) [803]. Not all organotin chlorides were stable in the adopted analysis conditions. N, Ai -ethylene-bis-stearamide and -oleamide in common plastics (ABS, SAN, PUR, LDPE, PA6.6) can be analysed by SEC after derivatisation with trifluo-roacetic anhydride. SEC analysis of fatty alcohol ethoxy-lates (FAE), used as nonionic surfactants, has also been described [759].

Alcohol ether sulfates (R0(CH2CH20)S03"Na-") - alcohol ethoxy-late reacted with sulfur trioxide and then neutralized in NaOH. Application s include dishwashing liquids and shampoos, home laundry powders, and personal care products. 

Analogous gel matrices of liquid crystalline lamellar phases can also be formed with nonionie mesogens, such as the combination of cetyl/stearyl alcohol and ethoxy-lated fatty alcohol, provided that the hydrophilic and lipophilic properties of the surfactant molecules are more or less balanced to favor the formation of lamellar structures. 

Initial Batch Reactor Studies. An agitated 2000 ml thick-walled glass reactor was blanketed with nitrogen and operated at 50°C. Vinyl acetate containing about 15 ppm hydroquinone was used without purification. The ionic emulsifier was Sipex EST-30, advertised as a sodium tridecyl ether sulfate, and the nonionic surfactant was Siponic L-25, a lauryl alcohol ethoxy-late. Table I shows the recipes and properties of the three seed latexes produced in the batch reactor. Essentially complete conversions were obtained in 30 to 45 minutes, but with a temperature rise of almost 50°C.

An overall comparison of the results of tests using brine indicates that ethoxylated alcohols and ethoxylated alcohol sulfates were superior for mobility control in enhanced oil recovery. It was found that the optimum hydrophobe for ethoxylated alcohol is a mixture with an average chain length of about 13 carbon atoms. The degree of ethoxylation is also important. It was found that 6 ethoxy late groups is close to the optimum. The formation of the sulfate ester tended to lessen the effect of chain length and reduce the optimum number of ethoxylate groups to 5. 

The sensitivity of fluorescence has made it invaluable in techniques in which specific chemicals, e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and alcohol ethoxy-lates, are linked to a fluorescent dye for detection in high-performance liquid chromatography (p. 218).

This formulation has excellent wetting, detergent, rinsing and foaming properties. It is recommended as a medium duty cleaner for truck bodies, floor scrubs, wax strippers, etc. This product is clear from -5C to 70C. This formula would require approximately 4 times as much sodium xylene sulfonate as the amount of Monateric CEM-36 used to achieve clarity.
