Molybdenum, recognized as an essential trace element for plants, animals, and most bacteria, is present in a variety of metaHo enzymes (44—46). Indeed, the absence of Mo, and in particular its co-factor, in humans leads to severe debility or early death (47,48). Molybdenum in the diet has been impHcated as having a role in lowering the incidence of dental caries and in the prevention of certain cancers (49,50). To aid the growth of plants. Mo has been used as a fertilizer and as a coating for legume seeds (51,52) (see FERTILIZERS Mineral NUTRIENTS). [Pg.475]

It has been shown that with combined exposure various metals may interact with each other and that one metal may alter the potential toxicity of another in either a beneficial or deleterious way. As an example, whilst arsenic has been shown to worsen cadmium-induced nephrotoxicity, data from experimental studies have shown that selenium may protect against the renal effects induced by cadmium [52]. Other studies have shown that the iron status may alter the toxic effects of aluminium at the level of the bone and the parathyroid gland [53,54], whilst in a recent increased lead accumulation was associated with disturbances in the concentration of a number of essential trace elements [55]. [Pg.889]

Tn recent years there has been an increased interest in assessing the human health effects from environmental exposure to trace metals. Studies of occupational exposures and dietary intakes of trace metals have required the refinement and development of analytical techniques for the analyses of low elemental concentrations in complex matrices. Molybdenum is one of the trace metals that has been the subject of intensive study because it is an essential trace element in both plant and animal nutrition. It is an integral constituent of several metalloenzymes including xanthine oxidase, which is the last enzyme in the catabolic pathway of purines. Extensive ingestion of molybdenum has been shown to cause molybdenosis in cattle. Many of the features of this condition can be ascribed to induced copper deficiency. Whether biochemical changes or adverse health effects in humans can be attributed to excessive exposure to molybdenum is not known. [Pg.33]

Quality measurements have several elements. Quality assurance plans and quality control procedures are an essential beginning. In addition, it is necessary to have qualified scientists whose training needs to be documented and updated on a continuous basis. Quality measurements also require proper use of reference materials where available, and laboratories must repeatedly test their ability to perform through taking part in proficiency testing schemes.
