Environmental profile

Environmental profile has been and will continue to be an important determinant of a market acceptability of surfactants, but will not guarantee its success (111—113). Price and availability have been primary determinants of hydrophobe choice for alcohol-based feedstocks (114). [Pg.260]

Traditionally carpet tile backings have been made from bitumen, PVC or polyurethane. There are problems with the environmental impact of these materials and they are difficult to recycle. Shaw industries developed their EcoWorx carpet tile backing using a polyolefin resin. This has superior environmental profile to PVC and is easier to recycle than bitumen and the cross-linked polyurethane backings. EcoWorx has lower toxicity, better adhesion and good dimensional stability. It is easy to recycle and can be separated from any fibre type used in the carpet tile. It works particularly well with nylon-6 fibres. EcoWorx tiles contain 40% recycled content and Shaw have established a collection and return scheme to close the loop. [Pg.61]

Offshore oil production is one area in which environmental pollution has been highlighted as an issue, particularly in the use of biocides in production waters. Tetrakis-hydroxymethyl phosphonium salts exhibit acceptable environmental profiles [1120], and they are regarded as the preferred products for bacterial control within the oil production industry. [Pg.73]

Well head pressures increased when injection was stopped at Well No. 1 for more than 24 h, apparently caused by a combination of precipitation reactions and backflow of sand. Injecting a slug of brine after every period of interrupted flow solved this problem. Movement of the main organic constituents (n-hexylamine, butanal, butanol, and phenol) was assumed to be slowed by adsorption. This conclusion was based on laboratory adsorption experiments by involving a different geologic formation (Cottage Grove sandstone) no direct observations were made of the injected waste. While participating in the European Union programme on risk assessment of existing chemicals, Euro Chlor (representing all major European chlorine producers), recognised the need to carry out a detailed risk evaluation on chemicals linked to the production of chlorine. In view of concerns about specific risks of organohalogen compounds to the marine environment as a sink for all watercourses, Euro Chlor focused on this environmental compartment, with emphasis on the North Sea. This sea area has been extensively studied and is controlled by the Oslo and Paris Convention for the Prevention of Marine Pollution (OSPARCOM). For a series of chemicals on lists of concern adopted by the North Sea Conference (1990), risk assessments are being carried out to demonstrate their variable environmental profiles. [Pg.58]

However, despite the intractable appearance of this problem, there are promising new approaches to the evaluation of chemical toxicity that may be well suited to predict differential toxicity between a pair of chemicals and to help evaluate the environmental profile of an alternative. To approach this problem, we need to think about what ultimately leads to toxicity. [Pg.21]

Guides to purchasing safer electronics have also been developed and made available to consumers. However, it does not necessarily follow that a natural molecule will have a favorable environmental profile [40b]. Many of the most toxic molecules known to science come from Nature, and natural molecules may not break down effectively in the absence of the organisms or conditions required for their biodegradation. [Pg.163]

This approach requires no additional synthetic steps for catalyst modification and overcomes proline s main shortcomings of moderate yield and enantioselectivity. In some cases, an even better combination of yield and enantioselectivity could be achieved using just 0.5 mol% of (R)-BINOL, but in general both isomers of BINOL were almost equally effective. However BINOL is unlikely to be readily biodegradable, biorenewable/biodegradable alternatives could further improve the environmental profile of this co-catalytic process. Although the cocatalyst loading of just... [Pg.182]
