Traditionally carpet tile backings have been made from bitumen, PVC or polyurethane. There are problems with the environmental impact of these materials and they are difficult to recycle. Shaw industries developed their EcoWorx carpet tile backing using a polyolefin resin. This has superior environmental profile to PVC and is easier to recycle than bitumen and the cross-linked polyurethane backings. EcoWorx has lower toxicity, better adhesion and good dimensional stability. It is easy to recycle and can be separated from any fibre type used in the carpet tile. It works particularly well with nylon-6 fibres. EcoWorx tiles contain 40% recycled content and Shaw have established a collection and return scheme to close the loop. [Pg.61]

When diagnosing stakeholder value it is important to understand that perceptions can be as important as scientific facts. For example, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) producers defend PVC on the basis of scientific arguments such as energy efficiency, low biomass accumulation, and product safety in normal use. Customers such as Nike, Sony, and Shaw Industries that have committed to eliminating PVC in their products as a precaution for their customers due to perceived health and environmental risks, are unlikely to change their perspective based on additional scientific facts provided by the chemical industry. As in the PVC case, manufacturers are vulnerable to value loss as a result of their customers perceptions of risks. [Pg.147]

Shaw Industries, Inc., Shaw Ceases Production of Polyvinyl Chloride Replacement Carpet Tile Backing Recognized by the EPA, press release on June 14, 2004. [Pg.160]

This work has been partially supported by the National Textile Center which is funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The author wishes to acknowledge the contributions by the Shaw Industries, Inc. and the North Georgia Ready Mix Co. [Pg.227]

Shaw Industries has an environmental guarantee program, promising to collecL transport, and recycle any carpet tile made with their EcoWorx backing, at no cost to the customer. The company will recycle the material into new carpet. The company was awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for development of that carpet tile as well as the Most Iimovative Product Award at NeoCon. Shaw also manufactures Eco Solu-... [Pg.541]

To undertake this study, a supply of real-world nylon fibers, and information regarding the dyes used to color them, was required. Shaw Industries, Inc. (Dalton, GA) supplied numerous colored nylon carpet samples with the associated dyes used to color the samples, and Collins Aikman (Dalton, GA) provided many colored nylon windings and information regarding the dyes used to color the fibers. Ciba Specialty Chemicals (High Point, NC) provided the dyes used to color those nylon windings. For both carpet- and winding samples, the manufacturers often used identical dye components to produce differenr colors by varying the ratio of dyes mixed. Only a small selection of the fiber and dye samples kindly provided by these manufacturers were used in this study. They are listed in Table 1. [Pg.67]

The authors wish to thank Shaw Industries, Inc., Collins Aikman, and Ciba Specialty Chemicals for generously supplying an excellent collection of materials and information to conduct this research. We also appreciate the guidance supplied by Ron Menold, a former FBI trace-evidence expert, who recently turned in his labcoat to pursue a career as an FBI agent. This work was funded by the FBI under DOE Project Number 2051-1119-Yl with BWXT Y-12 L.L.C., U.S. Department of Energy, under contract number DE-AC05-00OR22800. [Pg.78]

In courtroom litigation about toxic effects alleged to be caused by carpet, the defense had Anderson s expert testimony stricken from evidence based on a 1993 Supreme Court mling, Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, which had estabhshed a new set of standards for judging scientific evidence, including peer review and independent rephcation of findings. Sandra Ruffin Catherin Ruffin v. Shaw Industries, Incorporated Sherwin-Williams Company, 94-1882 (4th Cir. Ct. of Appeals, 1998). [Pg.201]
