Carpet tiles

The largest market for elastomer-based adhesives is that of lamination (see Laminates). Modem office furniture having Formica as a surfacing material is made with an elastomer-based adhesive. Tile adhesives for ceramic or carpet tile are also elastomer-based and usually solvent appHed. Paper adhesives and shoe manufacture also use substantial quantities of mbber-based materials. Solvent-weld adhesives are used to join plastic plumbing and to repair vinyl sheeting. 

Traditionally carpet tile backings have been made from bitumen, PVC or polyurethane. There are problems with the environmental impact of these materials and they are difficult to recycle. Shaw industries developed their EcoWorx carpet tile backing using a polyolefin resin. This has superior environmental profile to PVC and is easier to recycle than bitumen and the cross-linked polyurethane backings. EcoWorx has lower toxicity, better adhesion and good dimensional stability. It is easy to recycle and can be separated from any fibre type used in the carpet tile. It works particularly well with nylon-6 fibres. EcoWorx tiles contain 40% recycled content and Shaw have established a collection and return scheme to close the loop.

PLA fiber combines the most desired properties of natural fibers, such as wool, and synthetics, such as polyester. This combination of properties opens up a wealth of textile applications including clothing, carpet tiles, diapers/acquisition distribution layers, upholstery, furnishings, and filtration. PLA has a high dyeability, and in comparison with polyester in activewear, it displays superior wicking properties.

Adhesives are used in tufted carpets to anchor and stabilize the yarns they can also be used to attach a foam backing or a laminated secondary backing. Latices predominate with SBR (cross-linked) being the most widely used EVA latex (see Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers) is cheaper but has lower bond strength and is water sensitive. Other adhesives used are PVC plastisols in carpet tiles and hot melts and two-component polyurethanes in top-quality products (because hot melts and polyurethanes are relatively expensive). 

Typical applications of PLA in the home/office furnishing sector are carpets, tiles and rugs, draperies, curtains, pillows etc. PLA s low flammability and antimicrobial characteristics when loaded with the adequate additives permit its use in pillows, cushions, mattresses, sofas etc. A further application can be seen in PaperMate s Eco element, an innovative series of pens and pencils with the barrel made of PLA.
