PLA also finds applications in office automation equipment and electrical appliances. For instance, Sony adopted PLA to make the chassis of a portable audio player Walkman in 2002 by injection molding.

Trichloroethylene is a colourless non-flammable chlorinated hydrocarbon liquid. It is mainly used for degreasing of metals in the engineering and electrical appliance industries other outlets are as a solvent in inks, in dry-cleaning, in varnishes and adhesives, and as a solvent in the extraction of fats and oils. Relevant physical properties are given in Table 5.51. 

A world without bearings would look far different. Although rarely noticed, bearings are ubiquitous computers have a few, electric appliances contain several, and an automobile has hundreds. Without bearings, much of the motion that is taken for granted would not be possible. 

Natural gas must always be contained in appropriate pipes or vessels and precautions taken to ensure that leakage cannot occur. If a gas leak does occur, the main gas supply should be shut off, the area ventilated and the gas supplier informed. Electrical switches should not be turned on or off, portable electrical appliances including handheld torches should not be operated and all other possible sources of ignition removed or rendered inoperable and the affected area ventilated. In circumstances of excessive leakage, the building should be evacuated. 

It is instructive to consider the sources of plastics waste. Table 11.1 shows the types of plastics and their use in packaging, whilst Table 11.2 shows the proportion of waste classified by end use. This shows how significant packaging is in generating waste, and causing environmental problems. Applications such as furniture and electrical appliances show more acceptable use of polymers, because discard rates are low and lifetimes of the products are generally long. 

Large electrically powered domestic waste appliances, such as cookers, ovens, washing machines and other cleaning appliances, mobile electrical heaters, and ventilators come under the category of large electrical waste appliances. The electricity for the large waste electrical appliances is supplied by the electrical mains. 

The category of small electrical waste appliances comprises electrical appliances such as electric razors, music players, hair-removing appliances, hair dryers, egg boilers, immersion water heaters,... 

The only requirement for a disposal of small electrical waste appliances is that appliances may be shredded only if the components containing particularly hazardous substances have previously been removed. In the case of small cordless electrical appliances, the greater part of the hazardous substances can be eliminated by a prior removal of batteries and accumulators. 

Polymers are widely used as electrical insulators in applications such as wire and cable insulation, electrical appliance housings and capacitor films. Polymers used in these applications include polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, and isotactic polypropylene. 

Sounds and vibrations in electrical appliances or vehicles are in some cases unpleasant. If we can reduce these sounds and vibrations as we desire, we will have a more happy and comfortable life in the next century. Sections 4 and 5 discuss a new smart polymer gel for actively reducing sounds and vibrations. The smart gel can vary its elastic modulus in an electric field. 

Why is it dangerous to allow water near an electrical appliance> if water is an insulator ... 

An electrical plug has three connections (or pins ) live , neutral and earth . The earth pin is necessary for safety considerations. The potential of the earth pin is the same as that of the ground, so there is no potential difference if we stand on the ground and accidentally touch the earth pin in a plug or electrical appliance. We will not be electrocuted. Conversely, the potentials of the other pins are different from that of the earth - in fact, we sometimes cite their potentials with respect to the earth pin, effectively delining the potential of the ground as being zero. 

In an unprecedented step, the European Parliament has voted to ban two chemicals for which risk assessments are still pending. The chemicals, octabromodiphenylether and decabromodiphenyl ether, were lumped together with penta-BDE during a debate on the EC s proposed ban on that chemical, which is based on a completed risk assessment. All three chemicals are used as flame retardants. Parliamentarians backed the call to extend a ban on penta-BDE to octa-BDE, which is used in office equipment and domestic electrical appliances, by mid-2003. It is claimed that initial results of the ongoing risk assessments already indicate that the chemical is an environmental and public health hazard. MEPs have set a 2006 deadline for banning deca-BDE, adding that the ban should not come into force if the final results of the risk assessment show that deca-BDE is harmless. EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT...

Approximately 40 % of the thermoplastic polyester resin that is sold (excluding PET packaging resins) is flame-retarded. PET used for switches, sockets and other applications where the material is in direct contact with live parts of electronic and electrical appliances are required to be flame retardant.

The mechanical engineering sector is often omitted in statistics and its content is very unclear, overlapping other sectors such as electricity, appliances and so on. When it is identified, it is evaluated as accounting for from 2% up to 5% of overall thermoplastic consumption. 

ABS are good insulators even in a wet environment and are used for insulating housings of electric appliances, power tools. Special grades are marketed for electrical applications. Antistatic grades are marketed. 

BFRs have been added to various products (e.g., electrical appliances, building materials, vehicle parts, textiles, furnishings) since the 1960s, in growing rates (15-fold from the mid-1960s to 2003 DePierre 2003). BERs usually are classified as semi-volatile and hydrophobic, but these properties vary due to the large diversity of this group of compounds. 

Poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS Ryton) is a solvent-resistant plastic that is useful in high-temperature service (structure 4.71). PPS is used for pumps, sleeve bearing, cookware, quartz halogen lamp parts, and electrical appliance housings.
