Hair Removers. Hair removers are designed to remove hair from the skin surface without cutting ia order to avoid uadesirable stubble. Cosmetic products have beea developed for chemical destmctioa of hair, that is, depilatioa, and for facilitating mechanical hair removal, that is, epilation. 

Epilation is required for permanent hair removal. The most effective epilation process is electrolysis or a similar procedure. Epilation can also be achieved by pulling the fibers out of the skin. Eor this purpose, wax mixtures (rosia and beeswax) are blended with Hpids, for example, oleyl oleate, which melt at a suitable temperature (about 50—55°C). The mixture is appHed to the site (a cloth tape may be melted iato the mass) and after cooling is rapidly pulled off the skin. A similar process can be carried out with a tape impregnated with an aggressive adhesive.

Potassium, sodium and calcium sulphides are applied externally to soften the skin by dissolving the epidermis in diseases such as psoriasis, acne and seborrhea. Mixtures of calcium or potassium polysulphides and thiosulphate behave similarly and are also depilatories. Another common hair remover is barium sulphide, mixed with starch or zinc oxide, whereas selenium suphide and cadmium sulphide are applied topically, in shampoos, to control dandruff.

Applications Sodium sulfide is mainly used in tanning as a hair-removing agent (so-called asher). It is also utilized in ore flotation, dyeing with sulfur dyes in the textile industry and in the chemical industry e.g. for the precipitation of heavy metal ions. Anhydrous sodium sulfide is also utilized in the manufacture of polyphenylenesulfide (PPS), a high temperature-resistant plastic. The current production of sodium sulfide in Western Europe is estimated to be ca. 50 10- t/a. 

Applications Sodium hydrogen sulfide is mainly used in the paper industry, for ore flotation, in dye chemistry, in the leather industry for hair removal and in the synthesis of organic chemicals. The 1994 USA production of sodium hydrogen sulfide was ca. 100 10 t/a. 

Similar to other hair preparations that are formulated to modify the molecular configuration of hair, hair-removal products typically contain thioglycolate salts to dissolve the keratin protein. Because of the caustic nature of these products, care should be taken to minimize irritation to the surrounding skin.

The skin becomes more sensitive to the sun, perfumes and detergents. In fact, right from the start of treatment, the skin becomes more sensitive to any irritant beware of chemical hair removal products, waxes, dyes, etc. 

TCA penetrates more readily where the skin has been damaged. TCA-SAS should therefore not be applied immediately after hair removal, coagulation of telangiec-tasias, a session of mesotherapy, filling wrinkles, etc. Easy TCA is not a simple aqueous solution of TCA, but rather a tamed solution that can be applied safely after the treatments listed above. An aqueous solution of TCA is unstable a tamed solution is far more stable and penetrates more evenly. 

Eflornithine absorption after percutaneous administration is minimal (<1% of the applied dose). Commonly used hair removal methods such as shaving, plucking, or tweezing, when performed within 2 h before application, did not increase the percutaneous absorption. Steady state is reached after 4 days of twice daily application. Eflornithine is excreted unchanged in urine, and no metabolism has been observed. The apparent steady-state half-life is approximately 8 h.
