Electric/electronic applications

The global consumption is roughly estimated at 70000 t/year, mainly in industrial and electrical electronics applications. FEP and PEA consumptions are, perhaps, ten times inferior to that of PTFE. 

TPE/PVC targets general-purpose applications mainly in the automotive sector but also in construction, industrial, consumer goods, packaging, electrical electronics applications for various moulded and extruded technical goods, soft-touch overmoulding, grips. .. 

Theres a lot of competition between PS and the other five big thermoplastics LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PP, and PVC. Polystyrene continues to lose marker share, but it seems to have a permanent place in some applications, particularly molded foams (for carryout food containers), some extrusions, and sheet and film applications. About half the polystyrene ends up in packaging, 17% in electrical/electronics applications, 13% in construction, building products and furniture, and 7% in medical applications. 

The WAVIMAR anti-static GFR pipe easily satisfies the electrostatic safety criteria given in 5.3.1, the volume resistivity in axial direction is even too low to protect persons against shortcircuiting. The clear direction dependency of the volume resistivity might be an interesting option for other electric/electronic applications.

Over 65% of the global production of BPA is used to make PC and another 30% for epoxy resin production (Plastics Europe, 2010). Based on the 2010 data, however, only 7% of the PC was used in packaging and medical device applications. Most are instead used in construction as glazing or in media (CD and DVD applications) and in electrical/electronic applications. These non-packaging uses pose a lower risk. About a third of this global production is used in the United States. BPA is perhaps the most controversial of plastic-related EDCs present in the environment and is attributed to at least the following sources (Geens et al., 2011). 

Epoxy resins have proven very popular because of their versatility, excellent adhesion, low cure shrinkage, good electrical properties, compatibility with many other materials, resistance to weathering and chemicals, dependability, and ability to cure under adverse conditions. The most widely used epoxy resins in the casting field are the bisphenol-A and cycloaliphatic epoxies. Novolac epoxy resins have higher heat deflection temperatures, but they require high-temperature cure. The novolacs also have excellent resistance to solvents and chemicals. Firebrake ZB 415 with Dechlorane Plus gives flame-retardant properties superior to those of antimony oxide alone. Grade ZB 500 makes it possible to suppress fumes from fluoropolymers, and gives good flame-retardant properties to poly(ether ketone)s and polyfether sulphone)s. Other key applications are talc-reinforced PP replacing PVC. ABS, and PA 66 in electrical/electronic applications, and EVC cable compounds. 

Principal application areas are in water distribution, electrical-electronic applications, business machines, and automobiles. Water distribution applications include pump housings, impellers and filters, shower heads, faucets, valve handles, and other plumbing fixtures. Among the applications in the electrical-electronic areas are cabinets and internal television and radio parts, lighting fixtures, connectors, jimction boxes, wiring ducts, cable covers, protective devices, and motor housings. A variety of expensive materials are required in small volumes for electrical/electronic applications. Their average price is almost 20 times greater than the average for all adhesives. Conductive adhesives are the most costly. Electrical/electronic adhesives must exhibit good electrical, bonding, and mechanical properties (Table 21). 

A wide range of high performance applications have been developed for polyetherimide resins. The main markets for PEI resin and compounds are electrical/electronic applications, aircraft/aerospace interiors, food service (ovenable), high temperature lighting bezels and reflectors, medical instrument trays, institutional kitchenware and under-hood automotive applications. Automotive applications account for around a half of PEI market volume.
