Automobile applications

Poiybrominated benzenes (PBBz) and poiybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) have been widely used as flame or fire retardants. The use of flame retardants is recommended or required in diverse areas such as synthetic polymers which are used in building materials, textiles, packing materials, electric applications, automobile manufacturing etc. to protect the public from fire accidents [247,248]. PBBs were introduced as flame retardants in the early 1970s. In Japan e.g. the aimual con-... [Pg.112]

The chemical and thermal characteristics of PGE make them highly useful as catalysts in a wide variety of industrial, chemical, electrical and pharmaceutical processes (Johnson Matthey 2007). Their use as catalysts in automotive catalytic converters to reduce noxious emissions from the burning of fossil fuels has undoubtedly been one of the most far-reaching and important applications. Automobiles have been equipped with catalytic converters since 1975 and 1986 in the US and Europe, respectively. Initially, Pt and Pd were used to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions. Since the early 1990s, Rh has also been used in various combinations and ratios with Pt and Pd in three-way catalytic converters to reduce emissions. PGE appear to be emitted together with alumina particles from the washcoat as a result of various chemical, physical and... [Pg.554]

Recycling of nylon 6 is not limited to carpets and automobile parts. Toray, a Japanese company, in 1995 began recycling apparel made from nylon 6 by depolymerization and repolymerization.Used U.S. Postal Service nylon mailbags which are not repairable, are being recycled into pellets used for, among other applications, automobile parts. 1 ... [Pg.1042]

In addition, there are a number of alloy cast irons, many of which have improved corrosion resistance and substantially modified mechanical and physical properties. Generally, cast iron is not a particularly strong or tough structural material. Nevertheless, it is one of the most economical and is widely used in industry. Its annual production is surpassed only by steel. Iron castings are used in many items of equipment in the chemical-process industry, but its main use is in mechanical engineering applications automobile and machine tools. Some of the best known classes, fisted below, include the high-silicon and nickel cast irons. [Pg.78]

Among the areas where the use of polymeric nanocomposites have found a wider application, automobile industry, aerospace applications, packaging, household goods and building should be mentioned, among others. The increasing demand, both of the amounts of nanocomposites, as well as of nanocomposites with improved specific properties, cannot eventually be met due to technological problems when low cost materials with finely tuned properties are demanded. [Pg.164]

Electrical Applications. Plastics are used for electrical insulation, conduit and enclosures, lighting fixtures, and mechanical devices. The most widely used plastic for wire and cable insulation is flexible, plasticized PVC, which constitutes well over half the market in insulating wires for buildings, automobiles, appHances, and power and control lines. Polyethylene is also a factor. Higher performance plastics such as nylon and fluoropolymers also play a smaller role in this area. [Pg.333]

Galvanic cells in which stored chemicals can be reacted on demand to produce an electric current are termed primaiy cells. The discharging reac tion is irreversible and the contents, once exhausted, must be replaced or the cell discarded. Examples are the dry cells that activate small appliances. In some galvanic cells (called secondaiy cells), however, the reaction is reversible that is, application of an elec trical potential across the electrodes in the opposite direc tion will restore the reactants to their high-enthalpy state. Examples are rechargeable batteries for household appliances, automobiles, and many industrial applications. Electrolytic cells are the reactors upon which the electrochemical process, elec troplating, and electrowinning industries are based. [Pg.2409]

Polyamide PPOs are manufactured by General Electric (Noryl GTX), BASF having now withdrawn from marketing their product (Ultranyl). Usage of the blends has so far been mainly in the automobile field for such applications as valance panels, wheel trims, grilles, rear quarter panels, front bumpers and tailgates. [Pg.592]

Windshield sealants comprise some of the most significant applications of one-component urethane adhesives. Several years ago, the requirements for these sealants were increased. In an accidental rollover, in certain automobiles, the windshield becomes a structural part of the car. Therefore, the windshield adhesive, which holds the windshield in place, must have structural strength. An example of a one-component windshield sealant is shown below [48] ... [Pg.784]
