An anionic mlcroemulslon system was based on blends of monoethanolamlne salts of bilinear dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid and branched pentadecyl o-xylene sulfonic acid. The bilinear structure results from the alkylation of benzene with a linear a-olefin. The former acts as a surfactant hydrophile (H) while the latter acts as a surfactant lipophile (L) at room temperature for the oil and water phases used in this study. The hydrophile tends to form water-continuous emulsions while the lipophile forms oil-continuous emulsions. The hydrophile-lipophile characteristics were varied by changing the weight ratio of H/L from 0.5 to 0.8. Decane was used as the oil phase and 2.0 wt. X NaCl In water as the aqueovis phase. The water-oil ratio was fixed at 95/5 and the total surfactant content was fixed at 2 g/dl. [Pg.331]

Cao and coworkers reported that problems in processing of doped PANi could be solved by the use of functionalized protonic acids. Indeed, solutions of camphor-sulfonic acid doped with PANi in m-cresol show liquid crystallinity and high electrical conductivity, according to Smith and his coworkers. This prompted additional work with this and other polymers. Unfortunately, the conductivity of cast films of solutions of polypyrrole (PPy) doped with dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid in m-cresol is low (ca. 10 S/cm). [Pg.531]

Many modem composite materials are prepared by microemulsion methods. Polyaniline was prepared by one-step micellar chemical polymerisation of aniline with dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid via complex formation [297]. A transparent polyaniline suspension was made by dispersing polyaniline in m-cresol. Polyaniline composites blended with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) exhibits relatively high conductivity at low polyaniline volume fractions and keeps good mechanical properties equivalent to those of PMMA. It should be noted that most methods proposed for the preparation of new materials are at a laboratory level, however, a widespread commercial use can be predicted for the next decade. [Pg.592]

Polyaniline and its substituted derivatives, such as poly(o-toluidine), poly(o-anisidine), poly(N-methylaniline), poly(N-ethylaniline), poly(2,3-dimethylaniline), poly(2,5-dimethylaniline) and poly (diphenylamine) have been reported [36] to show measurable responses (sensitivity 60%) for short chain alcohols (viz., methanol, ethanol and propanol) at concentrations up to 3000 ppm. The change (decrease) in resistance of the polymers on exposure to alcohol vapors has been explained based on the vapor-induced change in the crystallinity of the polymer. Polypyrrole (PPy) incorporated with dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid and ammonium persulfate has been reported to show a linear change in resistance when exposed to methanol vapor in the range 87-5000 ppm [37]. The response is rapid and reversible at room temperature. [Pg.581]

Other studies in 2000 by Drew et al. reported that it is very difficult to spin fibers of PANI complexed to sulfonated polystyrene (PANFSPS), even when solutions containing sodium chloride and dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid sodium salt were used to lower the surface tension and thereby enhance electrospinning [16,17]. However, PANFSPS nanofibers can be produced by adding a carrier polymer such as PEO, polyacrylonitrile, or polyurethane. Also reported was the use of electrostatically layered sulfonated polystyrene as a template for the surface polymerization of conjugated polymers in their conducting form. Enzymatic synthesis of PANI and a copolymer of pyrrole and PEDOT was done on electrospun nanofiber... [Pg.169]

The surfactant solutions used need to be optimized, following the principles discussed in Section 3.4, to achieve the desired contact angles and emulsifying properties. Non-ionic ethoxylates, possibly mixtures of high and low HLB, in alkaline solution are often used [21]. Acid solutions are used where inorganics need to be removed, for example, a dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid [21]. [Pg.391]

Doping dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) into PANI/carbon nanotube composite can fabricate PANI/carbon nanotube-DBSA nanocomposite [56]. The preparation, as well as the adsorption to Cr(VI), is depicted in Figure 11.11 with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 55.55 mg/g. Electrostatic interactions between PANI and Cr(VI) anions are the predominant driving forces for this adsorption process. [Pg.600]

Electrical properties have been reported on numerous carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, including carbon nanoflber-modified thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers [53], low-density polyethylene [54], ethylene vinyl acetate [55], wire coating varnishes [56], polydimethyl siloxane polypyrrole composites [50], polyacrylonitrile [59], polycarbonate [58], polyacrylonitrile-polycarbonate composites [58], modified chrome polymers [59], lithium trifluoromethane sulfonamide-doped polystyrene-block copolymer [60], boron-containing polyvinyl alcohols [71], lanthanum tetrafluoride complexed ethylene oxide [151, 72, 73], polycarbonate-acrylonitrile diene [44], polyethylene deoxythiophe-nel, blends of polystyrene sulfonate, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene oxide [43], poly-pyrrole [61], polypyrrole-polypropylene-montmorillonite composites [62], polydimethyl siloxane-polypyrrole composites [63], polyaniline [46], epoxy resin-polyaniline dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid blends [64], and polyaniline-polyamide 6 composites [49]. [Pg.138]

Functionalized protonic acids such as ( ) camphor sulfonic acid (HCSA) and dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (HDBSA) are used as primary dopants while m-cresol, xylene, etc. are used as the secondary dopants. The free-standing non-oriented PANI-CSA films cast from the above solvents have conductivities in the range 100—400 S cm , a value two orders of magnitude larger than that of non-oriented films of emeraldine base doped with aqueous HCl. MacDiarmid et al. [34] found that the conductivity of POT-CSA is 0.2 S cm in w-cresol and 2 S cm in chloroform whereas that of PANI-CSA is 140 S cm in w-cresol and 0.16 S cm in chloroform. These differences can be attributed as due to the interaction of the non-polar covalent methyl groups in POT with less polar chloroform, whereas in the case of RANI, the polar backbone can interact more readily with the polar /n-cresol. [Pg.576]

Doping Doped polyaniline solutions were prepared in HFIP by a solution doping method (22). Solutions turned from blue / brown to forest green, characteristic of doped polyaniline. Molar doping of undoped polyaniline is calculated for polyaniline emeraldine salt from the mole ratio y = (moles of dopant) / (moles of phenyl-NH), determined by elemental analysis. Optimally doped polyaniline has the value of y = 0.5. Dopants used were camphor sulfonic acid (HSCA), (Aldrich) methane sulfonic acid (HMSA), Aldrich and dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (HDBSA), TCI America. Nylon 6 and 12 (Aldrich) were vacuum dried before solution blending. All PANI-ES solutions were filtered with a 0.50 pm filter. [Pg.33]
