The method of Kato and Nakai (27) for determining protein surface hydrophobicity was adapted for evaluating procyanidin binding to BSA and Gl. The procedure is based on the fact that the fluorescence quantum yield of cis-parinaric acid increases 40-fold when cis-parinaric acid enters a hydrophobic environment from a hydrophilic environment. The digestion of BSA by trypsin in the presence of procyanidin dimer, procyanidin trimer and black bean procyanidin polymer was evaluated by discontinuous sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) slab gel electrophoresis and a picryl sulfonic acid (TNBS) assay (28).

Only a few systematic studies have been carried out on the mechanism of interaction of organic surfactants and macromolecules. Mishra et al. (12) studied the effect of sulfonates (dodecyl), carboxylic acids (oleic and tridecanoic), and amines (dodecyl and dodecyltrimethyl) on the electrophoretic mobility of hydroxyapatite. Vogel et al. (13) studied the release of phosphate and calcium ions during the adsorption of benzene polycarboxylic acids onto apatite. Jurlaanse et al.(14) also observed a similar release of calcium and phosphate ions during the adsorption of polypeptides on dental enamel. Adsorption of polyphosphonate on hydroxyapatite and the associated release of phosphate ions was investigated by Rawls et al. (15). They found that phosphate ions were released into solution in amounts exceeding the quantity of phosphonate adsorbed.

An anionic mlcroemulslon system was based on blends of monoethanolamlne salts of bilinear dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid and branched pentadecyl o-xylene sulfonic acid. The bilinear structure results from the alkylation of benzene with a linear a-olefin. The former acts as a surfactant hydrophile (H) while the latter acts as a surfactant lipophile (L) at room temperature for the oil and water phases used in this study. The hydrophile tends to form water-continuous emulsions while the lipophile forms oil-continuous emulsions. The hydrophile-lipophile characteristics were varied by changing the weight ratio of H/L from 0.5 to 0.8. Decane was used as the oil phase and 2.0 wt. X NaCl In water as the aqueovis phase. The water-oil ratio was fixed at 95/5 and the total surfactant content was fixed at 2 g/dl.

PDM-337/TAA. In this system, aqueous solutions, prepared from d ionized and triple-distilled water, contained 9.0% by volume of a 63/37 weight-ratio mixture of PDM-337 surfactant (Exxon) and reagent grade tert-amyl alcohol (TAA). The surfactant is 84% active and is primarily the monoethanolamine salt of dodecyl orthoxylene sulfonic acid. Samples were prepared in the salinity range of 0.4 to 2.6 gm NaCl/dl surfactant solution. The NaCl was reagent grade. 

Cao and coworkers reported that problems in processing of doped PANi could be solved by the use of functionalized protonic acids. Indeed, solutions of camphor-sulfonic acid doped with PANi in m-cresol show liquid crystallinity and high electrical conductivity, according to Smith and his coworkers. This prompted additional work with this and other polymers. Unfortunately, the conductivity of cast films of solutions of polypyrrole (PPy) doped with dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid in m-cresol is low (ca. 10 S/cm).
