Acidity benzene

Oxidation pf a substituted alkylbenzene with KMnO or Ka r Oj vea a substituted benzene acid fSection 16.10). Both primorjr and secondary alkyl groups can be oxidiiod, but tertiary groups are not aflectod. [Pg.823]

Acid catalysts are used to promote the alkylation of ethylene to benzene. Acid catalysts suitable for benzene alkylation include protonic acids (i.e., H2SO4, HF, and H3PO4), Friedel-Crafts catalysts (i.e., AICI3 and BF3), and more recently, solid acid catalysts. Solid acid catalysts used for the commercial manufacture of EB are typically zeolitic molecular sieves and materials such as ZSM-5, faujasite, MCM-22, and zeolite beta. Zeolites physical and chemical properties can be modified to optimize the activity, selectivity, and stability of the catalysts. This flexibility of zeolites has made them the preferred catalyst of choice. [Pg.931]

Using this strategy, over 4500 compounds have been synthesized starting from a series of substituted pyrimidine and benzene acid chlorides [37],... [Pg.16]

This last group of solvents includes substances as diverse as acetone and benzene. Acid-base reactions in such solvents are complicated by extensive ion-pairing and by formation of other ionic and molecular aggregates. In acetone, which has a dielectric constant of 20.7 at 25°C, sodium perchlorate at O.OIM concentration is 80% associated to ion-pairs whereas the degree of association is only 31 % in nitromethane, 22% in acetonitrile, and 4% in sulpholane. In other respects acetone behaves like the dipolar aprotic solvents discussed in sect. 3.6. Jasiiiski and Pawlak, for example, showed that conductance titrations in acetone could be treated quantitatively in the same way as those in acetonitrile. The familiar potentiometric, conductometric, and spectrophotometric methods are applicable to the ionisation of anilines in acetone and acetone-water mixtures/ ... [Pg.379]

In fact, two-phase electrolytic media do not constitute practical systems for electrochemistry, and homogeneous benzene-acid solutions appeared preferable. These were achieved by using various mixtures of strong acids and superacids. [Pg.231]
