Cationic surfactants can also be used as functional additives in traditional chain lubricant formulations, including biocides, stress-craze inhibitors and coupling agents. As mentioned above, the first use of alkylamines in chain lubricants was as an additive in a traditional, soap-based formulation to improve the stability of the system. Highly ethoxylated amines and diamines have been recommended for demulsification of crude oil. Combinations of quaternary ammonium salts and amines oxides are useful for foaming and silt suspension. The voluntary withdrawal of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) as a wood preservative for domestic applications was driven by public concerns over its health and environmental profile. In its place have risen two competing systems, the amine copper quat (ACQ) system and the copper azole system. Both systems avoid using heavy metals such as chromium and arsenic and rely on the co-biocidal effects of copper and organic biocides. The elimination of CCA has created many opportunities for oleochemicals as preservative companies try to develop formulations that are not only environmentally friendly but can also match the preservative performance of CCA [66]. The ACQ system is based on didecyldimethyl ammonium bicarbonate and has produced a significant demand for ClO-based amine and quat. The azole systems use biocides such as tebuconazole and propiconazole in combination with copper ethanolamine complexes. Ethoxylated amines [67] and amine oxides [68] have been described as providing improved performance in azole-based systems. Other copper systems have employed ethoxylated diamines [69] and amine oxides [70] to enhance performance. [Pg.37]

Alkylamines and diamines are generally classified as corrosive to the skin based on results from laboratory animal (rabbit) studies performed in accordance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) test method (84) rabbits are considered to be especially sensitive to alkylamines which even at low concentrations can induce skin redness and swelling. Oleylamine has been shown to induce mild to moderate skin irritation in laboratory rats when appHed at a concentration of 0.3% in mineral oil (Chemical Manufacturer s Association, 1985). Fatty amines which contain alkyl chains of 10—14 carbons are considered more irritating than related products which contain alkyl chains of 14—18 carbon atoms. The ethoxylates of both mono- and diamines consist principally of tertiary amines, most of the primary nitrogen atoms adding on two ethylene oxide chains and the secondary nitrogen atoms of the diamines adding on one. Any surviving primary amine is the starting material, RNH2, and any secondary amine is either unreacted diamine or primary amine that has added on only one EO chain. Description. These surfactants can be considered as cationic or nonionic, depending on the degree of ethoxylation and on the pH at which they are used. Polyethoxylated amines are formed by ethoxylation of primary or secondary fatty amines. Because the ethylene oxide reacts primarily with the amine group, there is small amount of residual free amine. With primary amines, the ethoxylation takes place initially on both hydrogens directly linked to the nitrogen and is pursued afterward on the terminal hydroxyl groups. Diamines or polyamines can be ethoxylated similarly, like straight amines, amidoamines can also be ethoxylated. [Pg.26]

Primary amines and diamines, neutralized with, e.g., oleic acid, are used as corrosion inhibitors. The main product is N-tallow-l,3-propanediamine dioleate. The cationic amino function sticks to the metal surface and prevents corrosive attack. Quaternary ammonium compounds are used in sugar refining, as bactericides, sanitizers and disinfectants, and together with ethoxylated f in pesticide formulations and in agricultural adjuvants.
