The publication of interstate Standard GOST 30415-96" Steel. Non-destructive inspection of mechanical properties and microstructure of metal products by magnetic method" - is the long-expected event for works laboratories and development engineers of non-destructive test means. [Pg.25]

Molecular modeling has evolved as a synthesis of techniques from a number of disciplines—organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical physics, computer science, mathematics, and statistics. With the development of quantum mechanics (1,2) ia the early 1900s, the laws of physics necessary to relate molecular electronic stmcture to observable properties were defined. In a confluence of related developments, engineering and the national defense both played roles ia the development of computing machinery itself ia the United States (3). This evolution had a direct impact on computing ia chemistry, as the newly developed devices could be appHed to problems ia chemistry, permitting solutions to problems previously considered intractable. [Pg.157]

On the other hand, Mary, a research process development engineer, does not consider Joe s system to be inherently safer, because a truly inherently safer system would not require an interlock at all. The process uses flammable materials and operates at elevated pressure. Mary, looking at the entire process, would only consider it to be inherently safer if the flammable materials were eliminated or the process was operated at ambient pressure. Mary is considering the inherent safety characteristics of the entire process, rather than a single interlock system. [Pg.10]

In 1901, the U.S. National Bureau of Standards (NBS) - now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) - was founded because of the increasing demand for various kinds of standards in the rapidly developing engineering industries. The early history of the NBS reference material program started in 1905 with a cooperative effort within the iron and steel industry whereby industrial analysts helped characterize the individual reference materials. Cooperation with NBS was recognized as a mark of achievement for the laboratory, so this effort served a dual purpose. It both helped the laboratory develop its measurement skills and also helped NIST understand the meastuement problems associated with a given matrix. [Pg.2]

Laser desorption methods (such as LD-ITMS) are indicated as cost-saving real-time techniques for the near future. In a single laser shot, the LDI technique coupled with Fourier-transform mass spectrometry (FTMS) can provide detailed chemical information on the polymeric molecular structure, and is a tool for direct determination of additives and contaminants in polymers. This offers new analytical capabilities to solve problems in research, development, engineering, production, technical support, competitor product analysis, and defect analysis. Laser desorption techniques are limited to surface analysis and do not allow quantitation, but exhibit superior analyte selectivity. [Pg.737]

The total amount of money needed for research and development, engineering, marketing, and construction prior to the startup of a plant is 25,000,000. After the plant is completed it will take 3 years before the plant runs at full capacity. Diming these years the net proceeds before depreciation are estimated to be ... [Pg.288]

The next stage of development went to polymer chemists and development engineers, as the expertise of Roy Plunkett was really in fluorine chemistry. The first great application was in the separation of the isotope U-235 from U-238 by gaseous diffusion of UFe to make atomic bombs, as the gas uranium hexafluoride was exceedingly corrosive and destroyed conventional gaskets and seals. PTFE was just what was needed to form the diffusion membrane, as it was not attacked by fluorine. When peace returned, PTFE registered the trademark of Teflon in 1944. [Pg.29]

Viscometer design to fill simultaneously the needs of quality-control and production personnel as well as development engineers would appear to be a stimulating and rewarding field to which, evidently, little intelligent attention has been given to date. [Pg.148]

Polymeric materials, especially the radiation-sensitive polymers, lie at the heart of all of these new technologies. For the first time, it will be necessary for the development engineer as well as the scientist to possess a thorough understanding of the chemistry of radiation-sensitive polymers. This book provides the foundation for such an understanding. Although the book is based on research papers presented at a symposium, it has been constructed with considerable introductory material and considerable editing with the result that it is more of a unified text than a compilation of research papers. [Pg.4]

The mutual cooperation of both the marketing people and fabricators is required to insure the continued growth of thermoplastics. The flow of information, which is necessary, can be accomplished through personal contact and purchasing, material engineers, product engineers, and research and development engineers. [Pg.132]

A basic aim of fracture mechanics is to identify fracture criteria such as G,c and KI(. and others discussed later which are independent of the geometry of the cracked body and, ideally, even of the test conditions, e.g. test temperature. Thus fracture mechanics parameters should greatly assist in developing a more fundamental understanding of the fracture process and should be of considerable use in the practical areas of material selection and development, engineering design and life prediction. [Pg.48]

Let s look at the wet granulation step, for example. We will want to learn whether or not it affects the dissolution of the drug, the final blend performance, the drying and milling procedures, and the final tablet compression performance. If QA is to result from the development effort, answers must be had. The task cannot be left only to the process development scientist to solve, however. Thus, the pragmatic approach to the scientific effort would be that the answer be developed through the partnership of the physical pharmacist, the formula-tor, and the process development engineer (or scientist). [Pg.786]
