Engineering profession development

As the engineering profession developed in the nineteenth century, and its major institutions and educational frameworks were established, a number of groups advocated the cause of engineering science . The Gentlemen of Science of the British Association s early years saw engineering science as a way to institute hierarchical control over engineering by physical scientists, and even by gentlemen whose liberal education included mechanical science. Their representations... [Pg.171]

The chemical engineering profession needs to develop a strategic framework that fits with the current world in which we operate — flexible, proactive, engaging, communicating. Sustainability is a new concept for a new century. The elements of sustainability are more like the network (multi-faceted interactions) than the hub-and-spoke . Sustainability offers a framework for proactive interaction with the community by the chemical engineering profession. This chapter seeks to explore this concept and to outline what such a framework might look like. [Pg.68]

It is the job of a chemical engineer to develop and optimize chemical and physical processes in the transformation of raw materials to products. The efficiency and effectiveness of chemical processes will remain the heart of the chemical engineering profession. [Pg.108]

During World War II he served as technical adviser to the Commandant of the Chemical Warfare Service Development Laboratory at M.I.T. This laboratory, designed for use by the Chemical Engineering Department, served as its quarters from 1946 to 1976. He was appointed Chief Scientific Adviser to the Chief of Research and Development in 1958 and has lived in retirement in Arizona since 1960. His services as a consultant in the fields of petroleum, textiles, paper, and mechanical and electronic equipment were of great value in introducing the realities of the chemical engineering profession into the classroom, thus making his lectures come alive for the students. [Pg.124]

The exercises are an intentionally well-mixed bag. They range from simple applications of equations and concepts developed in the text to relatively open-ended situations that may require arbitrary judgement and, in some instances, have no unique answer. The units employed are equally well-mixed. Historically, multiple systems of measure have been a curse of the engineering profession and such is the case here particularly, where we range from the scientific purity of Planck s constant to the ultimate practicality of a barrel of oil. The SI system will eventually provide standardization, it is to be hoped, but this is not a short-term proposition. Because both author and reader must continue to cope with diverse sets of units, no attempt at standardization has been made here. [Pg.743]

The engineering profession demands critical thinking to recognize the best courses of action. However, engineers must develop critical thinking that is not... [Pg.423]

Major studies are currently being undertaken into composites durability. One of these programmes, the Composites Durability Study, is being carried out in the USA by the Civil Engineering Research Foundation and the Society of the Plastics Industry s Composites Institute Market Development Alliance, for the benefit of the design and construction industry and the civil engineering profession. It is said that particular concerns include... [Pg.375]

In short, because of a number of transformative sociotechnical developments in the engineering profession in the United States over the last 125-150 years, engineers today are more likely than ever to find themselves faced with challenging ethical issues at work. That makes it all the more important that they be equipped to address such issues in an ethically responsible manner. [Pg.15]
