Lead azide is produced as a white precipitate by mixing a solution of sodium azide with a solution of lead acetate or lead nitrate. It is absolutely essential that the process should be carried out in such manner that the precipitate consists of very small particles. The sensitivity of lead azide to shock and to friction increases rapidly as the size of the particles increases. Crystals 1 mm. in length are liable to explode spontaneously because of the internal stresses within them. The U. S. Ordnance Department specifications require that the lead azide shall contain no needle-shaped crystals more than 0.1 mm. in length. Lead azide is about as sensitive to impact when it is wet as when it is dry. Dextrinated lead azide can apparently be stored safely under water for long periods of time. The belief exists, however, that crystalline service azide becomes more sensitive when stored under water because of an increase in the size of the crystals. [Pg.425]

Figure 9.4 shows an example of a department-specific checklist that combines a sitewide section with a department-specific section. Notice that this organization elected not to use the standard categories given in the incident analysis worksheet seen in Figure 9.1. Its checklist is organized simply into two categories sitewide pinpoints and bindery pinpoints (which are the items specific to the bindery department). Shipment of hydrazine solutions is regulated in the United States by the Department of Transportation (DOT) which classifies all aqueous solutions between 64.4 and 37% N2H4 as "Corrosive" materials with a subsidiary risk of "Poison". Hydrazine has been identified by both the Environmental Protection Agency and the DOT as a hazardous material and has been assigned a reportable quantity (RQ) of 0.450 kg (1 lb) if spilled. Dmms for the shipment of these solutions must bear both the DOT specification "Corrosive" and "Poison" labels in association with the markings "RQ Hydrazine Aqueous Solution UN 2030." The Department of Transportation classifies HCl as a corrosive material and requires that it be transported in DOT-approved deHvery vessels. Tank cars must conform to 103B, 103B-W, or DOT 111A60W5 specifications.
