Other Risks

While we focus in this chapter on the role that flexibiUty can play in mitigating supply, process and demand risks, it is important to recognize that these are not the only supply chain risks. Firms should also include the foUowing in their risk management programs

In determining the risk from a financial perspective, a company should add the financial factors they determine important and arrive at a total loss the company is willing to accept. This becomes the criteria used in the risk assessment for financial impact. 

When a fire occurs at a facility, it is generally noticed by the public very quickly. Local news organizations are quick to arrive and communicate to the public via television and radio. Damage to reputation can impact public opinion and directly impact the value of a company (the price of stock). 

Fires result in impacts on the environment air pollution, firefighting water runoff, and hazardous and nonhazardous waste. 

Environmental impact is part of a facility s risk tolerance criteria. First, there is the direct cost of clean-up, monitoring costs, and environmental costs. There could be potential fines from local, state, or federal authorities. Finally, there may be potential civil actions that could result in millions of dollars of damage.

Several studies have investigated the role of dietary factors in prostate cancer risk, but results appear inconsistent. Significant effects have not been detected for dietary soya products certain vegetables, beans, fruit, rice and seaweed appear to be protective in some studies, while another has shown no protective effect from seaweed or vegetable consumption. In this chapter we will consider only exposure to chemical agents in the air. We will not address other risks that do not influence the dose received by a worker. 

As with all drugs, the specific side effects of the quinolones must be considered when they are chosen for treatment of bacterial infections [5]. Reactions of the gastrointestinal tract and the central neivous system are the most often observed adverse effects during therapy with quinolones. It should be underlined, however, that compared with many other antimicrobials, diarrhea is less frequently observed during quinolone treatment. Antibiotic-associated colitis has been observed rarely during quinolone therapy. Similarly, hypersensitivity reactions, as observed during therapy with penicillins and other (3-lactams, is less frequently caused by quinolones. Some other risks of quinolone therapy have been defined and must be considered if a drug from this class is chosen for treatment of bacterial infections. 

NOTE Under these low hardness but high MU demand circumstances, other risk factors also exist, especially in smaller boilers. Typically, the high MU water demand reduces the FW temperature, which permits the oxygen level to rise and thus requires additional sulfite scavenger to counter the increased risk of corrosion. Also, the requirement for BD is increased as TDS and SS levels also rise, so fuel and other operating costs increase accordingly.

These are Just some examples of key areas this is not an exhaustive list. Look around your workplace to identify other risk areas. If any risks apply to your work activities, you will need to do risk assessments to check that you have removed or reduced the risk. 

With the other risks the emphasis is placed on the importance of having available a quantitative evaluation method. Although it seems difficult, it would also be useful for toxicity. The following paragraph illustrates an approach, which used to be used in France by the old PUCK L This is followed by an introduction to the approach suggested in paragraph 3.6.

If accompanied by friends or family with whom the patient is living, ask them to remove from the home all guns, caustic chemicals, medications, and objects the person might use to harm self or others. Risk factors for suicide include severity of depression, feelings of hopelessness, comorbid personality disorder, and a history of a previous suicide attempt.19... 

The risk of gout increases as the serum uric acid concentration increases, and approximately 30% of patients with levels greater than 10 mg/dL (greater than 595 pmol/L) develop symptoms of gout within 5 years. However, most patients with hyperuricemia are asymptomatic. Other risk factors for gout include obesity, ethanol use, and dyslipidemia. Gout is seen frequently in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease, but a causal relationship has not been established. 

Adverse effects include nausea, weight gain, breast tenderness, and breakthrough bleeding. Oral contraceptives have also been associated with an increased incidence of thromboembolic disease, particularly in women who use tobacco products or have other risk factors for thromboembolism. The development of these complications is significantly reduced when low-dose estrogen formulations of oral contraceptives are used.3... 

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the only potential cure for SCD. The best candidates are children with SCD who are younger than 16 years of age with severe complications who have an identical H LA-matched donor, usually a sibling. The transplant-related mortality rate is between 5% and 10%, and graft rejection is approximately 10%. Other risks include secondary malignancies, development of seizures or intracranial bleeding, and infection in the immediate posttransplant period.6,25,32,33... 

Non-infectious causes of meningitis include malignancy, medications, autoimmune disease (such as lupus), and trauma.8,9 The most common pathogens causing bacterial meningitis, by age group and other risk factors, are found in Table 67-1.
