The Department of Transportation classifies HCl as a corrosive material and requires that it be transported in DOT-approved deHvery vessels. Tank cars must conform to 103B, 103B-W, or DOT 111A60W5 specifications. Tank trailers must conform to DOT MC-310, MC-311, MC-312, or DOT-412 specifications with display of a corrosive placard on both sides, front, and rear of the tank. The United Nations identification number for muriatic acid is UN1789, which must appear on aH shipping papers and placards.

The following shipping paper is only illustrative since it may vary in format. However, all descriptions will be basically Ihe same. You should look for this type of eniry lo determine the shipping name of the haiardous material, its classification, its 10 number (10 No.), and a reportable quantity notation (RO or RO-number) for use in reporting spill incidents to the National Response Center. With very few exceptions, shipping papers identifying haiardous materials are required when they are being transported ...

In some instances when dealing with test substance products sold in bulk or minibulk, one must obtain shipping papers or bills of lading from a chemical dealer to document the lot number and origin of the test material and how the test material reached the field site. 

Shipping Papers Term used to refer to the shipping documents that must accompany all shipments of hazardous materials and waste. 

Although we are using chlorine as the functional group, it may be any of the other halogens. In addition, we are giving the common names, while the proper names may be used on the labels and shipping papers. Ethyl chloride s proper name is chloroethane. 

Hazardous Materials Classes The hazard class of a hazardous material is indicated by its class (or division) number, or its class name. For a placard corresponding to the primary hazard class of a material, the hazard class or division number must be displayed in the lower comer of the placard. However, no hazard class or division may be displayed on a placard representing the subsidiary hazard of the material. The class or division number must appear on the shipping paper after each shipping name. The reader should refer to Chapter 1 for detailed information on hazardous materials classes. 

These consist of field data sheets, sample storage records, bench sheets or laboratory notebooks, chromatograms, and shipping papers. Some of the laboratory records, in particular, can be electronic rather than paper. 

Step 4. Transfer the sample by pipette or syringe to a volumetric flask of the volume selected for sample analysis (usually 25-100 mL). Record the amount so transferred (by volume or mass), and compare to volume recorded in shipping papers. Quantitatively rinse the container several times with the same acid solution as that in which the sample was delivered. Transfer the rinse to the volumetric flask that contains the sample. Save the vial in which the sample was shipped (see Step 9). Dilute the sample in the volumetric flask to the mark with the same acid solution. (Note If the sample is to be measured by mass, make the appropriate balance measurements on the volumetric flask when empty, before adding wash and diluting liquid, and when full.) Close the flask, label it, and thoroughly mix the sample by shaking. 

Dry the filter overnight at room temperature and then for 2 hr at 80° in a vacuum oven. Label the edge of the filter with a pencil, place between the membrane filter shipping papers, and store in a desiccator at room temperature until needed. 

D - Determine if there is a hazard present by looking for placards, signs, labels, or shipping papers. E - Estimate likely harm without intervention Identify the possible damage if the incident is allowed to run its course without intervention. There may be less danger to personnel, equipment, and the environment by choosing this option.

The technical standards contained in the DOT regulations cited above apply to hazardous waste transporters as well as to generators. 8 263.10(a). Aside from these standards, the transporter regulations are relatively straightforward. Transporters must notify EPA comply with the manifest system utilize special shipping papers for bulk hazardous waste shipments by rail or water and comply with the clean-up requirements in 8 263.30 and 263.32 if hazardous waste is discharged during transport.
