Cultural differences

Cultural differences may have a strong influence on the approach you apply to PSM system design and to installation of the systems. In some countries (e.g., Japan) it is expected that the design process will be a participatory one, and attempts to simply install a system that had been designed elsewhere would be doomed to failure. In other countries (e.g., India), the norm is highly directive management within plants, and attempts at employee involvement in system design would be unlikely to work. 

National cultural differences. A variety of research studies have highlighted differences between countries in the extent to which they accept and benefit from mentoring as a developmental approach. Table 5.3 and the following comments will explain this statement in more detail (Laurent, 1981, 1983 Hofstede, 1991 Trompenaars, 1993, 1994). 

In the context of psychological treatments, cultural differences between the therapist and patient (such as in language, values and expectations) are important determining factors for patient satisfaction and the therapeutic relationship between patient and therapist, which will subsequently determine prospective treatment adherence (Jackson et al, 2007). In a similar way, the use of psychotherapeutic strategies deriving mainly from western theoretical orientation can have limited usefulness in patients from different cultures. Fed-batch cultures differ from batch cultures by the possibility of additional input of the main substrate. Potentially, fed-batch cultures are very promising since in these cultures the possibility to prolong a hydrogen production phase with approximately constant rate exists. Unfortunately publications reporting the application of this cultivation regime for hydrogen production systems are not known to us. 

Authorization, accessibility and other support is determined by the relationship with the company and its culture. The relations with the company have to be such that access to the relevant data is sufficiently authorized and fully supported by the company s management. The fourth criterion is sufficient authorization to obtain relevant data. The accessibility and other support are mainly influenced by the cultures of researcher and company employees. For example, cultural differences can influence the correct understanding of data or people. The final criterion is therefore a company located in The Netherlands.

Rhizosecretion is easy to scale up and very cost effective with respect to isolation and purification. However, the bioreactor systems used for hairy root cultures differ from those used for plant cell suspensions. Traditional bioreactor systems have recently been adapted for root culture, and this technology is now being taken to commercial scales. The most traditional system is the airlift bioreactor used for microorganisms or plant cells. This system is adapted for the culturing of roots in liquid medium. Mist culture systems have also been developed. For this technology, the volume of the culture medium is reduced and the concentration of the secreted therapeutic protein is increased. If the protein to be produced is known to be quite stable, then a less expensive hydroponic culture can be designed in a manner suitable for scale-up.

Southeast Asian nationalisms were distinct from those of Europe not simply because they arose in a culturally different context. The modern states which introduced state nationalism in its modern form were alien imperial states. They were able to establish their authority in Southeast Asia in the late nineteenth century in large part because they embodied, to a much greater extent than their local opponents, that homogeneous amalgam of ethnie and state nationalism which proved so successful in the nineteenth century— the sure and attested way of attaining power and wealth (McNeill 1985 56). The policies of these imperial states therefore have an important bearing on the shaping of identities.
