Deadly introduction

The first thing to notice about these results is that the influence of the micropores reduces the effective diffusion coefficient below the value of the bulk diffusion coefficient for the macropore system. This is also clear in general from the forms of equations (10.44) and (10.48). As increases from zero, corresponding to the introduction of micropores, the variance of the response pulse Increases, and this corresponds to a reduction in the effective diffusion coefficient. The second important point is that the influence of the micropores on the results is quite small-Indeed it seems unlikely that measurements of this type will be able to realize their promise to provide information about diffusion in dead-end pores. [Pg.109]

Sample Transport Transport time, the time elapsed between sample withdrawal from the process and its introduction into the analyzer, shoiild be minimized, particiilarly if the analyzer is an automatic analyzer-controller. Any sample-transport time in the analyzer-controller loop must be treated as equivalent to process dead time in determining conventional feedback controller settings or in evaluating controller performance. Reduction in transport time usually means transporting the sample in the vapor state. [Pg.767]

All drum filters (except the single-compartment filter) utilize a rotary-valve arrangement in the drum-axis support trunnion to facih-tate removal of filtrate and wash hquid and to allow introduction of air or gas for cake blowback if needed. The valve controls the relative duration of each cycle as well as providing dead portions of the cycle through the use of bridge blocks. A typical valve design is shown in Fig. 18-121. Internal piping manifolds connect the valve with various sections of the drum. [Pg.1714]

The idea of the effective plate number was introduced and employed by Purnell [4], Desty [5] and others in the late 1950s. Its conception was evoked as a direct result of the introduction of the capillary column or open tubular column. Even in 1960, the open tubular column could be constructed to produce efficiencies of up to a million theoretical plates [6]. However, it became immediately apparent that these high efficiencies were only obtained for solutes eluted at very low (k ) values and, consequently, very close to the column dead volume. More importantly, on the basis of the performance realized from packed columns, the high efficiencies did not... [Pg.187]

During their passage through the column, sample molecules spend part of the time in the mobile phase and part in the stationary phase. All molecules spend the same amount of time in the mobile phase. This time is called the column dead tine or holdup time (t.) and is equivalent to the tine required for an unretained solute to reach the detector frsolute retention time (t,) is the time between the instant of saiq>le introduction and when the detector senses the maximum of the retained peak. This value is greater than the column holdup time by the amount of time the solute spends in the stationary phase and is called the adjusted retention time (t, ). These values lead to the fundamental relationship, equation (1.1), describing retention in gas and liquid chromatography. [Pg.7]

We should therefore use small bore tubing in short lengths for making the injector-column and the detector-column connections, and the injector and detector must be designed so that their internal volume is as small as possible. Dead volume before the introduction of the sample should also be minimised, to facilitate rapid changes of mobile phase composition that may be required during gradient elution. [Pg.253]

In tandem MS mode, because the product ions are recorded with the same TOF mass analyzers as in full scan mode, the same high resolution and mass accuracy is obtained. Isolation of the precursor ion can be performed either at unit mass resolution or at 2-3 m/z units for multiply charged ions. Accurate mass measurements of the elemental composition of product ions greatly facilitate spectra interpretation and the main applications are peptide analysis and metabolite identification using electrospray iomzation [68]. In TOF mass analyzers accurate mass determination can be affected by various parameters such as (i) ion intensities, (ii) room temperature or (iii) detector dead time. Interestingly, the mass spectrum can be recalibrated post-acquisition using the mass of a known ion (lock mass). The lock mass can be a cluster ion in full scan mode or the residual precursor ion in the product ion mode. For LC-MS analysis a dual spray (LockSpray) source has been described, which allows the continuous introduction of a reference analyte into the mass spectrometer for improved accurate mass measurements [69]. The versatile precursor ion scan, another specific feature of the triple quadrupole, is maintained in the QqTOF instrument. However, in pre-... [Pg.35]

The concept of the effective plate number was introduced and employed in the late nineteen fifties by Purnell (7), Desty (8) and others. Its introduction arose directly as a result of the development of the capillary column, which, even in 1960, could be made to produce efficiencies of up to a million theoretical plates (9). It was noted, however, that these high efficiencies were were only realized for solutes eluted close to the column dead volume, that is, at very low k values. Furthermore, they in no way reflected the increase in resolving power that would be expected from such high efficiencies on the basis of the performance of packed columns. This poor performance, relative to the high efficiencies produced, can be shown theoretically ( and Indeed will be, later in this book) to result from the high phase ratio of capillary columns made at that time. That is the ratio of the mobile phase to the stationary phase in the column. The high phase ratio was... [Pg.63]

A further miniaturization of solution introduction into ICP-MS allows the analysis of nanolitre sample volumes so that 100% transport efficiency is achieved and dead volume is minimized using nanovolume ( 50 nl) flow injection together with a total consumption nebulizer operating at uptake rates significantly below the 10p,lmin 1 level. The microflow nebulizer (DS 5 developed... [Pg.148]

The most recent alteration ofBl 3 involved the introduction of another foreign gene to allow complete metabolism of para-cteso through transformation of the dead-end metabolite, 4-methyl-2-ene lactone, accumulated by the benzoate... [Pg.353]

But, let s assume that the first microsecond after the introduction of the rat, that the liquid did vaporize. The vapor so generated, would be trapped in the reflux drum. The pressure in the drum would increase. Not by 20 psig, but just a little. The small increase in pressure in the reflux drum would push up the liquid level in the condenser. The surface area of the condenser, available to subcool the liquid, would increase. The liquid temperature would be reduced. As the subcooled liquid flowed across the dead rat, its pressure would drop. The liquid s pressure would fall, to exactly that pressure that corresponds to the vapor pressure of the butane, at the temperature in the reflux drum. [Pg.154]

Polymerizations proceeding without any termination were known for a long time, e. g. it was realized that the anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide (23) might exemplify such a situation. The subject has been recently brought into focus by this writer (24,25) who proposed also the name living polymers for those polymeric species that did not lose their ability to grow further. The introduction of this term is justified by the existence of an older term — dead polymers which denotes those polymeric molecules that did lose their ability to grow, i.e. polymeric molecules that are terminated. [Pg.287]

In the remainder of this introductory section, we review three commentaries on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, published with the Evans- Wentz edition. These are the introduction by Evans-Wentz himself, the distinguished translator-editor of four treatises on Tibetan mysticism the commentary by Carl Jung, the Swiss psychoanalyst and by Lama Govinda, and initiate of one of the principle Buddhist orders of Tibet. [Pg.6]
