Dandruff

Sulfathiazole is advised as an hair lotion additive defatting the hair and reducing formation of dandruff (1024). The polymeric 2-aminothiazoles derivatives (427) exhibit good thermal stability with decomposition in air starting at 350°C (1025). 

Medicated Dandruff Shampoos. Dandmff is a scalp condition characterized by the production of excessive cellular material (18). A number of shampoos have been marketed which are designed to control and alleviate this condition, and many additives have been included in shampoo compositions to classify them as treatment products for dandmff. These additives include antimicrobial additives, eg, quaternary ammonium salts keratolytic agents, eg, saUcychc acid and sulfur heavy metals, eg, cadmium sulfide coal tar resorcinol and many others. More recent (ca 1993) systems use selenium sulfide [7488-56-4] or zinc pyrithione [13463-41 -7] as active antidandmff shampoo additives. Both of these additives are classified as dmgs, but can be found in over-the-counter products. A stronger version, incorporating the use of higher levels of selenium sulfide in a shampoo, is available but requires a prescription for purchase. 

Ketoconazole. Initial observations indicating that oral administration of ketocona2ole (10) produced good results in seborrheic ec2ema and dandruff, led to the development of a 2% cream and a 2% shampoo (scalp gel) of this antimycotic (17,18). Naturally, these two topical forms of ketocona2ole [65277-42-1] are highly active against superficial mycoses. 

The main application of these two topical forms is the treatment of seborrheic ec2ema and dandruff. Ketocona2ole s potent pityrosporicidal effect at concentrations of 100 ng/mL to 1 p.g/mL forms the rationale of this activity. 

Salicylic acid is used to treat acne, warts, dandruff, psoriasis, and similar conditions. In the treatment of acne, it slows the shedding of skin cells in hair follicles, so they do not clog the pores and cause pimples. It also has a keratolytic effect—it causes dead skin cells to slough off— which removes the top layer of skin and clears existing pore clogs. 

The sulfosuccinate monoester based on undecylenic acid monoethanolamide and its antimicrobial properties was described shortly before [12]. In comparison of shampoos containing different antidandruff agents, this sulfosuccinate s performance was favorably evaluated [13]. It was neutral with respect to lipid replacement on scalp and forehead after application of the respective shampoo. This undecylenic acid-based sulfosuccinate was also found to reduce dandruff formation in another investigation [14]. 

At the last visit, MW s fluoxetine was changed to bupropion, pergolide was started and gradually increased to 0.25 mg three times daily, and a dandruff shampoo was started. Since that time his skin condition, attitude, apathy, stiffness, rigidity, handwriting, tremor, slowness, and kicking have improved. The UPDRs score is 5 while "on".

Provided a sample of DNA can be obtained, a restriction analysis can be carried ont. A match between the restriction fragments from a sample of DNA left at the scene of a crime and that of a snspect is a valnable tool in forensic science. The usefulness of this techniqne is increased enormously by combining it with the polymerase chain reaction, since the amount of DNA extracted from a very small amount of tissue can be increased enormonsly, providing enough for a restriction analysis. Tissne samples as small as a single cell, a hair, a drop of sahva, a piece of dandruff or a smear of semen are snfflcient to prodnce enough DNA. It has produced a revolution in forensic science. Selenium sulfide (SeS ) is used for some medicines, as an additive for medicated shampoos to control dandruff and scalp itching, and in treatment products for acne and eczema. 

Oilatum bath additive and E45 cream are both emollients that soothe, smooth and hydrate the skin, so ore useful in dry skin conditions. Nizoral shampoo is on antifungal preparation containing ketoconozole that is used in dandruff. 

Dandruff is a form of seborrhoeic dermatitis. Management of dandruff lies with the application of a mild detergent shampoo once or twice a week. Shampoos containing coal tar may be recommended however, the use of such shampoos is not first-line treatment. Betnovate lotion containing betamethasone, a potent corticosteroid, may be useful in severe dandruff. 

Ketoconazole and coal tar are available as preparations intended for scalp application and are indicated against dandruff and psoriasis or chronic atopic eczema respectively.

Selenium sulphide, coal tar, ketoconazole and salicylic acid are agents that can be used in dandruff. Permethrin is an insecticide indicated in the eradication of head lice. Permethrin is available as alcoholic or aqueous lotions.
