Medicated Dandruff Shampoos. Dandmff is a scalp condition characterized by the production of excessive cellular material (18). A number of shampoos have been marketed which are designed to control and alleviate this condition, and many additives have been included in shampoo compositions to classify them as treatment products for dandmff. These additives include antimicrobial additives, eg, quaternary ammonium salts keratolytic agents, eg, saUcychc acid and sulfur heavy metals, eg, cadmium sulfide coal tar resorcinol and many others. More recent (ca 1993) systems use selenium sulfide [7488-56-4] or zinc pyrithione [13463-41 -7] as active antidandmff shampoo additives. Both of these additives are classified as dmgs, but can be found in over-the-counter products. A stronger version, incorporating the use of higher levels of selenium sulfide in a shampoo, is available but requires a prescription for purchase. 

At the last visit, MW s fluoxetine was changed to bupropion, pergolide was started and gradually increased to 0.25 mg three times daily, and a dandruff shampoo was started. Since that time his skin condition, attitude, apathy, stiffness, rigidity, handwriting, tremor, slowness, and kicking have improved. The UPDRs score is 5 while "on".

Historically, asphalt has been mined for use as mortar for building and paving stones, as a water-proof road surface and lining for ditches and ponds, and as calking for ships. Both asphalt and tar have been used to seal or calk boat hulls, shingles, and fabric. In medicine, they have been used to seal wounds and as a disinfectant. Most cases of blepharitis involve a combination of staphylococcal and seborrheic changes. The patient should be instructed carefully in appropriate lid hygiene techniques and the application of antibiotics as previously described. In addition, the patient should be referred for treatment of the dermatitis. An over-the-coimter dandruff shampoo should be recommended.

Key products derived from pyridine (1) are the non-selective herbicides paraquat (5) and diquat (6) and the fungicide zinc pyrithione (7) used in a well-known fluh -dandruff shampoo. y5-Picoline (3) is a key precursor to vitamin B3 and both niacinamide (8) and niacin (9) are produced on the large scale (i.e. several thousand tons per year). The insecticide chloropyrifos (10) can be prepared from 6-picoline.

Se concentrations in municipal effluents vary widely, from 1.0 to over l(X)0/rg/l (Capon, 1991 Kapoor et al, 1995 Adriano, 2001). The sodium salt of N-hydroxy-2-pyridinethiones has a germicidal activity againts yeasts and fungi. Sodium omadine is a 40% aqueous solution of sodium pyrithione. It is used in the metallurgical industry as a component of water-based metalwork fluids, of aceto-polyvinyl lattices, water-based printer s ink, lubricant for synthetic fibers and anti-dandruff shampoos. A case was reported in a metallurgic worker. 

There is little commonality in the scientific methods, processes, and formulations required for the wide variety of cosmetics and toiletries in the market. Products range from preparations for hair, oral, and skin care to lipsticks, nail polishes and extenders, deodorants, body powders and aerosols, to quasi-pharmaceutical over-the-counter products such as antiperspirants, dandruff shampoos, antimicrobial soaps, and acne and sun screen products. 

Due to the biological role of selenium (see below), the element is used in pharmaceutical applications, as a supplementary additive for grazing ground and as an additive in anti-dandruff shampoos.
