Counter-productive

Medicated Dandruff Shampoos. Dandmff is a scalp condition characterized by the production of excessive cellular material (18). A number of shampoos have been marketed which are designed to control and alleviate this condition, and many additives have been included in shampoo compositions to classify them as treatment products for dandmff. These additives include antimicrobial additives, eg, quaternary ammonium salts keratolytic agents, eg, saUcychc acid and sulfur heavy metals, eg, cadmium sulfide coal tar resorcinol and many others. More recent (ca 1993) systems use selenium sulfide [7488-56-4] or zinc pyrithione [13463-41 -7] as active antidandmff shampoo additives. Both of these additives are classified as dmgs, but can be found in over-the-counter products. A stronger version, incorporating the use of higher levels of selenium sulfide in a shampoo, is available but requires a prescription for purchase. 

Several factors were utilized in bringing formaldehyde release down. In particular, resin manufacturer executed more careful control of variables such as pH, formaldehyde content, and control of methylolation. There has also been a progressive decrease in the resin content of pad baths. The common practice of applying the same level of resin to a 50% cotton—50% polyester fabric as to a 100% cotton fabric was demonstrated to be unnecessary and counter productive (89). Smooth-dry performance can be enhanced by using additives such as polyacrylates, polyurethanes, or siUcones without affecting formaldehyde release. 

Once widely used in over-the-counter products, hexachlorophene is now available by prescription only, due to incidents of overdose in infants in France during the 1970s. It has been largely replaced by the related compound triclosan.

Some experimenting nught be necessary if it turns out that quadratic terms such as improve the fit between the model and the data. However, the relevant point is that such a model is only a means to refine and speed up the process of finding optimal conditions. For this purpose it is counter-productive to try for a perfect fit, it might even be advantageous to keep the model simple and throw out all but the best five to 10 experiments, choose new conditions, and then return to the work bench.

There are now many herbal supplements, functional foods and other over-the-counter products that promise to boost the immune response and most are considered to be safe for use by the general public. Although there is limited published evidence of adverse immune system effects of these materials, some have been associated with autoimmunity [95,96], See chapter 11 for a detailed discussion of the beneficial and potential adverse effects of nutraceuticals and functional foods. 

In a completely different area, the setting of minimum detectable levels, the politically expedient method may be counter productive to the expansion of knowledge. Dr. Kurtz related an example of this "We had a local manufacturer dribble amounts of kepone and mirex in the local streams from waste disposal on their site. At one point a few wells of homeowners along the stream were found to contain kepone at levels in the low parts per trillion. Later in annual state testing programs these wells were found not to contain any kepone. Was there a lowering of contamination What had probably happened was that the minimum detectable level was set above most of these early levels, and the later samples were less than this minimum level. It took on a suspicious air that the state had purposely set this level to avoid future controversy in this area."...

Most microarray printers are now housed in boxes set up to control humidity and many are provided with high efficiency particulate air (HEFA) filtration to remove particulates. However, a word of caution attempting to nm a HEFA filter along with a humidifier may be counter-productive if the humid air is exhausted by the HEFA system. Check the design of the environmental chamber to verify whether both devices can be used during a print nm. 

There is no doubt that the aforementioned glycosides are the most satisfactory inotropic compounds. However, digitahs drugs can be counter productive in some patients for a number of reasons. A wide variety of sedative-hypnotic products that do not require a prescription are available.
