Science is primarily a scholarly endeavor the practice of medicine is primarily a practical trade. Scientists try to find out more and more about the world, even if doing so is time-consuming. Medicine, in contrast, depends more on what is usefiil than on what is true. That includes the specialties of neurology and psychiatry. The important information for medicine is that which enables medical practicioners to decide how best to try to help individual sick people. Generally those decisions must be made within a limited amount of time in order to be useful. Even the decision to do nothing is a decision that affects patient welfare. When possible, medical decisions are based on scientific information, but where the science is lacking the decisions still have to be made. [Pg.2]

The US equivalent is the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), a trade association founded in 1958. PhRMA is a nonprofit scientific and professional organization of more than 100 pharmaceutical manufacturers. The Association promulgates voluntary standards ( Guiding Principles ) for producers, encourages product research and prepares and disseminates information on behalf of the industry. The Association also publishes consumer-orientated informational materials on drug utilisation. Voluntary standards proposed in 2005 include initiatives regarding direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription medicines, use of an electronic system to track pharmaceuticals from the place of manufacture to the place where dispensed, and broader dissemination of clinical study data. [Pg.601]

Specific guidelines for developing interventions to address adherence problems in children can be found in the USP s Ten Guiding Principles for Teaching Children and Adolescents about Medicines. These principles were developed on recommendations from more than 100 health care professionals, educators, and consumer representatives who attended the USP s fall 1996 open conference, Children and Medicines Information Isn t Just for Grownups. The proceedings of this conference and... [Pg.18]

Thanks to the invention of lasers, the revolutionary breakthrough in this field occurred in the 1960s. Since then, lasers have become ubiquitous, utilized in thousands of highly varied applications in every section of modern society, including consumer electronics, information technology, science, medicine, industry, entertainment, and... [Pg.78]

A semiconductor microcircuit is a series of electrically intercoimected films that are laid down by chemical reactions. The successful growth and manipulation of these films depend heavily on proper design of the chemical reactors in which they are laid down, the choice of chemical reagents, separation and purification steps, and the design and operation of sophisticated control systems. Microelectronics based on microcircuits are commonly used in such consumer items as calculators, digital watches, personal computers, and microwave ovens and in information processing units that are used in communication, defense, space exploration, medicine, and education. [Pg.53]

Dmg information received by both the consumers and the providers of medicines has a significant influence on rational dmg use. Dmg information is distributed as widely as dmg products themselves. Systems of regulating dmg information include pre-approval and self-regulation. However, monitoring of the accuracy and appropriateness of information is generally inadequate, and the effectiveness of existing systems of regulation is unknown. [Pg.4]

Genetics Home Reference (GHR) is the National Library of Medicine s Web site for consumer information about genetic conditions and the genes or chromosomes responsible for those conditions. Here you can find a condition summary on isobutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency that describes the major features of the condition, provides information about the condition s genetic basis, and explains its pattern of inheritance. In addition, a summary of the gene or chromosome related to isobutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency is provided.2... [Pg.3]

About Herbs, a project of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (New York, New York), evaluates more than 300 herbs, dietary supplements, and "alternative" cancer treatments. Both "professional" and consumer versions are provided, but most of the professional information is readily understandable by la5q>eople. The articles are shorter than their counterparts in the Natural Medicines database, but they are researched and written quite well. [Pg.531]

The mission of the USP is to promote public health through establishing and disseminating legally recognized standards of quality and information for the use of medicines and related artieles by health eare professionals, patients, and consumers. [Pg.73]

Except in the United States of America and New Zealand, where direct to consumer (DTC) advertising of prescription medicines is allowed, companies are not allowed to communicate directly with patients. The Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPl) Code of Practice has been relaxed a little in this area in recent years and companies can now communicate in a very limited fashion with the general public. Clause 20.2 of the Code allows the provision of non-promotional information either in response to a direct enquiry from an individual or via press conferences, press announcements, lectures and media reports, public relations activities and the like. [Pg.348]

The Medicines Act, together with the associated EU legislation and EU and ICH guidelines, should ensure that the safety of drugs made to the highest quality, the acceptability of their risk/benefit ratio and the promotion of correct information to the prescribers and consumers are the dominant features of the controls that operate today. [Pg.487]

There are two safety net thresholds. For general patients, once a patient has spent AUD 874.90 on PBS medicines, the patient co-payment decreases to the concessional level of AUD 4.60 for the rest of the calendar year. For concessional patients the safety net threshold is AUD 239.20. Once concessional patients reach this level they receive PBS items free of charge for the rest of the calendar year. From 1 August 2003 information about the full cost of each item has been included on the label of the medicine, so that consumers will be better informed. [Pg.673]

As prescription medicines are prescribed by a medical practitioner rather than purchased off the shelf by the consumer, there is generally little incentive to convey origin information. Where manufacturers choose to do so, they must comply with State Fair Trading Acts, and the Commonwealth Trade Practices Act 1974. [Pg.682]

Medicines Regulation, it did not even consider the possibility of consumer-directed promotions, but only envisaged rather technical information promotions to health care providers and payers. Thus, since it seemed to be impossible, DTCA was not explicitly prohibited in New Zealand. [Pg.193]

III.b.1.9. Public education about medicines. Without sufficient knowledge about the risks and benefits of using medicines and when and how to use them, people will often not get the expected clinical outcomes and may suffer adverse effects. This is true for prescribed medicines, as well as medicines used without the advice of health professionals. Governments have a responsibility to ensure both the quality of medicines and the quality of the information about medicines available to consumers. This will require ... [Pg.89]
