Federal Government Support

Subsequently, basic scientific research made great contributions to our nation s economic strength and its security. Some wonderful examples are described in a series of publications called Beyond Discovery The Path from Research to Human Benefit produced by the National Academies. Each brochnre chronicles some discovery in basic science and how it has had applications beyond what anybody could have imagined. Often as a side benefit, many new products emerged from federal government support (for example, communications satellites) and a series of new discoveries was made. 

All these factors led to a new interest in cooperation in research. One bit of evidence for this change was that the Carter administration s Domestic Policy Review on Industrial Iimovation conducted from 1978 through 1980 recommended that the federal government support generic applied research for industry and that the antitrust laws be modified to facilitate horizontal cooperation in R D among competing firms. 

The Pharmacy Development Program (PDP) provides federal government support for programs of quality accreditation of pharmacies, for the provision of medicine information for consumers, and for research programs to identify cost effective professional pharmacy initiatives that can demonstrate net benefits for the Australian health system. 

With this federal government support, professional pharmacy bodies have established practice standards, measurable performance indicators, and pharmacy accreditation programs. The standards address health promotion, drug dispensing, dose administration aids, patient counseling, compounding, medication reviews, comprehensive pharmaceutical care, drug information services, liaison pharmacy, and pharmacy services in residential care facilities.
