Construction site installations

The 17th edition of the lET Regulations considers construction sites very special locations, devoting the whole of Section 704 to their requirements. A construction site installation should be tested and inspected in accordance with Part 6 of the lET Regulations every three months throughout the construction period.

Another expense which is included under indirect plant cost is the item of construction or field expense and includes temporary construction and operation, construction tools and rentals, home office personnel located at the construction site, construction payroll, travel and living, taxes and insurance, and other construction overhead. This expense item is occasionally included under equipment installation, or more often under engineering, supervision, and construction. Site construction of the project requires organizing the constmction bid packages, selecting contractors, and writing subcontracts. These contracts include a specific scope of work for the various construction and installation tasks and the implementation of appropriate procedures for expediting the project. An equipment installation document is then prepared for the construction contractor (9). This document verifies that equipment is properly connected to the defined utilities (air, electrical, water, sanitary drains, product, cleaning systems) and that the contractor has a planned schedule of events. A construction site will have many people working on a building project throughout the construction period. The groundwork people lay the foundations, the steel work is erected, the bricklayers build the walls, the carpenters put on the roof and, only when the building is waterproof do the electricians and mechanical service trades begin to install the electrical and mechanical systems. 

Temporary electrical supplies provided on construction sites can save many man hours of labour by providing the energy required for fixed and portable tools and lighting which speeds up the completion of a project. Method 2, the use of Class 11 insulated equipment is limited to single pieces of equipment such as tools used on construction sites, because it relies upon effective supervision to ensure that no metallic equipment or extraneous earthed metalwork enters the area of the installation.
