Electrical accidents on construction sites are almost always caused by unsafe equipment and/or installations, unsafe workplaces caused by environmental factors, or rmsafe work practices. Protection from electrical hazards is one way to prevent accidents. According to OSHA, protective methods that may be employed on your jobsite include insulation, electrical protective devices, guarding, grounding, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe work practices. [Pg.191]

Fly ash and bottom ash has been declared a special waste by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in concordance with the Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (R.C.R.A.). This designation requires that coal ash disposal ponds be sealed to prevent downward percolation of leachate and that groundwater monitoring systems be installed at the site. Many disposal ponds constructed prior to 1976 are unlined and may allow the infiltration of leachate into the groundwater aquifer. While newer ponds may be lined, the life of the lining before it is breached is unknown. Therefore, information is needed on the chemical composition of ash leachates to evaluate the effect of this leachate on groundwater quality. [Pg.342]

Other significant costs associated with site preparation include construction of a pad and cover, well drilling as well as buying and installing a groundwater pump, holding tanks, and associated plumbing. Post-construction monitoring of underfloor voids is usually resisted by housing developers and is not widely undertaken. However, it is possible to monitor die imderfloor voids between membrane installation and selling of a property and this has been carried out on a number of sites. Post-construction monitoring has also been used to demonstrate the effectiveness of underfloor voids in reducing the risk of gas ingress where gas protection membranes have been omitted by mistake or where validation has not been imdertaken. [Pg.173]
