Of the hand-held power operated electrical tools, the most common are the electric drill and portable grinding wheel. The major safety requirements for portable tools are  

1 The supply cable should be of the flexible type (i.e. with stranded conductors) with its connections correctly made, being electrically and mechanically sound at both tool and point of supply. Plugs and sockets should be of a type appropriate to the work envirorunent and conform to the relevant BS or BS EN. The cable sheath should be clamped securely at plug and tool entries. 

2 Metal-cased (class I) tools should be efficiently earthed, normally achieved by a connection from the case to the protective (earth) conductor in the supply cable. 

4 Suitable means should be provided for cutting off tfie supply as well as for isolation purposes. In tire case of portable tools, the plug and socket connection will achieve this otherwise an isolating switch or switch-fuse will need to be installed in a readily operable position.

Lithium batteries have developed over the past 30 years to become one of the most promising new battery systems. When cables are to be sized for a particular project with regard to their short-circuit performance it is necessary to consider the let-through current of the protective device in the circuit e.g., fuse, circuit breaker. It is also necessary to determine whether the consnmer has fixed equipment such as a motor, or temporary equipment such as a portable tool plugged into a socket, because this establishes the minimum time dnration. Portable tools must be fed from a 110 V socket outlet unit (see Fig. 1.29(a)) incorporating splash-proof sockets and plugs with a keyway which prevents a tool from one voltage from being connected to the socket outlet of a different voltage.
